In Need Of MomentumMitsubishi is one of the biggest brands to fall in the North American market over the years. It used to be a stable brand with a slew of offerings that enticed the public, but modern car trends and new brands have nearly driven Mitsubishi out of the U.S. market. Keen to regain a stronger foothold in the region, the brand announced "Momentum 2030," a multifaceted business plan to address its current struggles. One of the plan's main aspects is reintroducing multiple new models with different powertrains, the first of which is set to debut soon.Mitsubishi2027 Mitsubishi Eclipse SportbackWe all cried when Mitsubishi slapped the Eclipse badge on a crossover, but you have to give them credit for sticking to their guns and doing it again with an all-new EV Crossover/SUV. Sometime in October of this year, the Japanese automaker will launch the 2027 Mitsubishi Eclipse Sportback. The announcement includes an approved starting price of $37,745 (exclusive of destination fees).Mitsubishi's announcement also says it will offer only one option for this model, called the Technology Package, priced at $2,600. The Technology Package adds an Electrochromatic Panoramic Glass Roof that can transition from transparent to opaque at the push of a button. The package also includes a premium Bose sound system, hands-free power tailgate, and roof rails. For the powertrain, the Eclipse Sportback has a 75-kilowatt-hour (kWh) lithium-ion battery pack capable of 282 miles on a single charge. The EV motor has a power rating of 214 hp and 261 lb-ft of torque. The Eclipse Sportback will offer both Level 1 and 2 charging in the SAE J1772 format, as well as Level 3 with Tesla's NACS format, for easier charging.MitsubishiMomentum 2030One thing to note about the Eclipse is that it's based on the Nissan Leaf, which is apparent in the exterior styling and even in the interior layout. It's also interesting that the Leaf has multiple models and trims that undercut the Eclipse Sportback by a huge margin. Starting prices for the Leaf are $29,990; Nissan even has a lower destination charge. As mentioned, the introduction of the 2027 Eclipse Sportback is the first step in the brand's "Momentum 2030" plan. Next on the list is a new, more rugged off-road version of the Outlander SUV, expected in early 2027. Mitsubishi says its new plan for North America centers on expanding adventure-oriented, off-road-capable vehicles to meet a customer shift toward more rugged, versatile options. That plan includes Mitsubishi relaunching a pickup in the U.S. under its partnership with Nissan.Mitsubishi
