Luxury brands spent years trying to convince truck buyers they should drive SUVs instead. Truck makers apparently decided it would be easier to build luxury vehicles that can also tow a house. That seems to be the idea behind the next-generation 2027 GMC Sierra 1500, which has just been previewed ahead of its expected launch later this year. GMC calls it the most advanced, luxurious, and powerful Sierra 1500 ever, and for once, that does not sound like empty auto-show poetry. The redesigned Sierra follows the new 2027 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, but GMC is clearly aiming for a more premium corner of the full-size pickup market. The two trucks share GM's larger strategy, and that strategy is very simple: the V8 pickup is not going away quietly.2027 GMC Sierra 1500 Elevation Crew CabView the 3 images of this gallery on the original articleAdvertisementAdvertisementIn fact, the 2027 Sierra 1500 will introduce GM's new sixth-generation Small Block V8 engines in 5.7-liter and 6.6-liter displacements. Full performance figures have not been released yet, but GMC says the new engines feature advances in combustion, cooling, control systems, and fuel injection. Every available engine will be paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission. The lineup will also keep an enhanced TurboMax engine, described by GMC as offering best-in-class standard torque, along with the class-exclusive Duramax diesel. In other words, GMC is not trying to sell one truck to everyone. It wants a version for daily driving, towing, off-road use, long-haul work, and probably that one neighbor who insists the grocery store is best reached with 6.6 liters of naturally aspirated confidence. The flagship will be the Denali Ultimate, which comes standard with the new 6.6-liter V8. GMC says it is the most powerful naturally aspirated V8 engine in its class, though the exact numbers will be announced later.2027 GMC Sierra 1500 Denali UltimateView the 3 images of this gallery on the original articleAdvertisementAdvertisementInside, the Denali Ultimate goes very hard on technology. GMC says the cabin offers more than 60 inches of combined digital displays, including a 16.3-inch infotainment screen, an 11.5-inch front passenger screen, a 12.2-inch driver information display, a 15-inch head-up display, and an 8.5-inch rear camera mirror. There is also a Bose Premium Series audio system with 16 speakers, including front head-restraint-mounted speakers, plus real wood trim, available panoramic sunroof, hidden storage behind the articulating center screen, and a new MultiPro center console that can open into a work surface.Super Cruise will also be standard on Denali Ultimate for three years, including hands-free driving while towing on more than 600,000 miles of compatible roads in the U.S. and Canada. That matters because luxury trucks are not just about leather anymore. They are mobile offices, family haulers, road-trip machines, and sometimes very expensive ways to avoid asking a friend with a trailer for help. Then there is the AT4X, which is where GMC reminds everyone that premium does not have to mean pavement-only. The 2027 Sierra 1500 AT4X gets 35-inch Goodyear Wrangler Territory MT tires, a two-inch suspension lift, Multimatic Jounce Control Dampers, and front and rear electronic locking differentials. GMC will also continue offering the AEV Edition package for buyers who want even more off-road hardware.AdvertisementAdvertisementThat makes the AT4X a natural companion for the kind of tiny off-road camper that is ready to leave campgrounds behind. It may be luxurious inside, but this is still the Sierra built for dirt, rocks, and the sort of weekend plans that begin with "the map says there might be a trail."2027 GMC Sierra 1500 Denali Ultimate Stealth BlackView the 2 images of this gallery on the original articleThe rest of the 2027 Sierra 1500 lineup will include Pro, Elevation, AT4, and Denali trims. GMC says the first models are expected to reach dealerships before the end of the 2026 calendar year, with more details on pricing, full specs, and performance numbers coming closer to launch. For now, the message is clear. GM is splitting its full-size truck personality in two. The Silverado remains the more traditional working truck with V8 pride. The Sierra is the upscale version that wants to tow, crawl, cruise, and arrive at dinner looking like it owns the valet stand.AdvertisementAdvertisementThe luxury pickup race is not slowing down. If anything, it is getting bigger, more digital, more expensive, and still very fluent in V8.This story was originally published by Men's Journal on Jun 27, 2026, where it first appeared in the News section.
