With strong powertrains, long range, and a useful feature set, it's an excellent choice for drivers seeking electrified utility. The Silverado EV competes against its General Motors stablemate, the GMC Sierra EV, as well as the Rivian R1T electric truck.AdvertisementAdvertisementImage shown is last year model. Like its main rivals, the Silverado EV doesn't skimp on utility. A towing capacity of 12,500 pounds and payload of 2,350 pounds tell the story: This is a truck meant to work.AdvertisementAdvertisementUnlike many pickups, however, the 2027 Silverado EV has some truly impressive party tricks. Acceleration is one—every trim scoots from 0 to 60 in under six seconds, and some come closer to four. Even better, with the Max Range battery pack, the Silverado EV can go nearly 500 miles between charges. In fact, under the right circumstances, it can do over 1,000. The interior is simple but pleasant, and the crew cab is spacious. For all those virtues, this EV isn't without its quirks. In base trims, the suspension rides crudely and fails to entirely mask the Silverado's impressive weight. The Trail Boss trim claims to add real off-road capability, but it lacks a locking differential, and we found it struggled even on easy trails. The deciding factor may be pricing. GM revised its original strategy after buyers didn't respond to its initial MSRP, and last year's Silverado now starts well under $60,000. If the 2027 model sticks close to that territory, the Silverado EV represents a strong value against the likes of the Rivian R1T.Top-Ranked Competitors:Rivian R1TAdvertisementAdvertisementGMC Sierra EVTesla CybertruckMotorTrend TestedThe 2027 Silverado EV loses a few trims, but it still offers plenty of options. All-wheel drive is standard throughout, and acceleration is uniformly impressive.Even the most affordable trim (Work Truck Standard Range) makes an impressive 510 hp and 490 lb-ft. Bumping up to Extended or Max Range battery packs raises torque output to 580 lb-ft. We haven't had a Work Truck on our testing track, but Chevy claims a 0–60 time of 5.8 seconds. The LT trim unlocks 605 hp and 605 lb-ft in Standard Range form. Opting for Extended Range adds an extra 40 hp and 160 lb-ft. For 2027, the LT is no longer available with the Max Range battery pack.AdvertisementAdvertisementAlthough Chevy has cut last year's RST models, the Trail Boss takes its place at the top of the heap. Trail Boss models are available with either Extended Range or Max Range batteries, making 625 and 725 hp, respectively (along with 775 lb-ft of torque). In our testing, a Trail Boss Max Range needed just 4.4 seconds to reach 60.Charging and RangeRange is one of the Silverado EV's most impressive attributes. The big truck's weight and shape make its efficiency numbers pedestrian by EV standards, but Chevrolet makes up the difference with massive battery packs. The result is that the Silverado EV can go a long way between charges, but it will cost a pretty penny when you're there. The thriftiest configuration is a Work Truck with the Max Range battery pack, which boasts a 493-mile range, according to GM. At 478 miles of range, the Trail Boss Max Range isn't far behind. Extended Range models earn ratings between 410 and 424 miles, and the Standard Range battery maxes out at 286 miles.Recharging speeds vary by battery pack with a max rate of 350 kilowatts. That's faster than most competitors and quick enough to make road-trip refuels reasonable. In our testing, a Silverado EV added 118 miles of range in 15 minutes.AdvertisementAdvertisementGM got access to Tesla's Supercharger network in 2024, and this year's Silverado EV completes the brand's conversion to NACS charging ports. Adapters are available for CCS and J1772 charging.Safety Ratings and FeaturesThe Silverado EV earned a perfect five-star score from the NHTSA for 2026, and 2027 should be the same. Chevy makes all active safety tech standard, which we'd expect given the Silverado EV's price). Every model gets:Automatic emergency brakingBlind-spot monitoringLane keeping assistAdaptive cruise control360 cameraAutomatic high-beamsSide bicyclist alertsCargo Space and Interior RoomThe 2027 Silverado EV comes in just one configuration: short bed, crew cab. That's typical for the segment, and its bed length easily outstrips a Rivian R1T. Like the R1T and the Tesla Cybertruck, the Silverado EV has a small frunk (10.7 cubic feet).AdvertisementAdvertisementPassenger space is exceptional; the Silverado's cab leads the pack for legroom in both rows.TechnologyInfotainmentGM's infotainment system is consistent across the range: a 17.7-inch touchscreen running an Android-based OS. Notably, GM's system is not compatible with either Android Auto or Apple CarPlay; maps and apps are integrated natively, but there's no option for smartphone mirroring. After an eight-year grace period, drivers will have to pay a subscription fee to continue using connected apps like Google Maps.Other standard tech features include:11.0-inch digital gauge clusterInterior and exterior power outletsAdvertisementAdvertisementWi-Fi hotspot capabilityValueStandard FeaturesAside from the included tech and safety features, basic Work Truck models keep things spartan, but for utility-oriented buyers, that's a good thing.Available options on LT and Trail Boss include:Wireless chargingHeated front and rear seatsDriver memory settingsBed-view cameraHead-up displaySuper Cruise hands-free modeSpray-on bedlinerRecommended TrimWe'd stick to the basics on the 2027 Silverado EV. The cabin isn't premium enough to be a luxury barge, base trims already have plenty of power, and the vehicle works best as a long-range workhorse. We'd take a WT or LT trim, bump up the battery until we were satisfied with range, and call it a day.AdvertisementAdvertisementWhen a more premium interior is important, we'd consider the Rivian R1T.
