1972 Chevrolet Chevelle SS Shipped to Australia in 2011 Heads to AuctionA 1972 Chevrolet Chevelle SS that spent its first four decades in the United States is now up for grabs on the other side of the world. The Chevelle is being offered through Collecting Cars, with the online auction showing just over a week remaining and no bids on the board at the time of writing. The car was first registered in 1972, stayed in the U.S. until 2011, and was then shipped to Australia, where it now sits in the Hawkesbury area of New South Wales. It is a left-hand-drive example, which is exactly what you would expect from a Chevelle that was built in Detroit's backyard and only later took up residence Down Under.Small-Block Power, Turbo 350 AutomaticUnder the hood is a 5.7-liter (350-cubic-inch) V-8 sending power to the rear wheels through a three-speed Turbo 350 automatic. That is the more modest end of what Chevrolet offered on the 1972 SS, which could also be ordered with a 402 big block or the range-topping SS 454. By 1972, horsepower ratings were quoted as net figures, so the numbers look smaller than they did a few years earlier, but the car still delivers the torquey V-8 feel the Chevelle name is known for. The seller notes an electronic ignition has been fitted. The listing describes the exterior as Blue Purple over a black interior. It rides on 15-inch wheels wrapped in Mastercraft Avenger GT tires, and the cabin has front and rear bench seats, round dash instruments and a radio/cassette player. The odometer reads 75,843 miles, though Collecting Cars notes the figure is not warranted. The car comes with its owner's manual and two sets of keys.Paint, Paperwork and ProvenanceThe Chevelle is said to have been repainted in the U.S. before its 2011 import. There is no detailed service documentation, but the seller says they have personally serviced the car since June 2011. The VIN has been checked against the Australian Personal Property Securities Register with no security interest logged, and a NEVDIS check found no written-off or stolen markers. As with any SS from this era, it pays to do your homework. Because the SS was an option package on the Chevelle, prospective buyers will want to go through the photo gallery, ask questions in the comments and confirm the car's trim and equipment before bidding. Collecting Cars charges a buyer's premium of 6 percent of the final sale price, with a minimum of A$2,000 and a maximum of A$11,000.What the Market SaysThe 1972 model year was the last of the second-generation Chevelle, and Chevrolet built an estimated 701,000 of them. According to the Hagerty Valuation Tools, a base 1972 Chevelle sport coupe with the 307 V-8 in #3 (Good) condition was worth about $13,600 as of July 2026, with a range from $12,200 to $14,600. Hagerty shows values down roughly 0.7 percent over the past year. The spread at auction is far wider than that. Hagerty's data shows 1,051 examples of the 1972 Chevelle sold at public auction over the last three years, with prices running from $3,400 at the bottom to $222,500 at the top. The most recent result it lists was $99,000 at Barrett-Jackson on September 12, 2026. SS models, big-block cars and well-restored examples sit well above the base-coupe numbers, so anyone eyeing this one should plug the exact trim, engine and condition into the Hagerty tool and compare it with recent sales.Keep in mind that this car's value will also be shaped by its location. Australian buyers have a deep appreciation for American muscle, and a well-presented, documented SS tends to stand out. A shipped-in buyer from the U.S. would need to weigh freight, import costs and the buyer's premium on top of the winning bid.More Chevelle Muscle on MotoriousIf the 1972 SS has you in a Chevelle mood, we have plenty more to look at.
