Following its global debut in May 2025, the sixth-generation Toyota RAV4 has now been launched in Japan. Available exclusively with a hybrid powertrain, the redesigned SUV starts at 4.5 million yen (about RM118k) for the Adventure grade while the Z grade is priced at 4.9 million yen (RM129k) – these figures are inclusive of consumption tax. In the coming financial year 2026, the RAV4 in Japan will be gain plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and GR Sport variants. The hybrid powertrain in the RAV4 features an A25A-FXS 2.5 litre naturally-aspirated inline-four petrol engine that serves up 186 PS (184 hp or 137 kW) at 6,000 rpm and 221 Nm of torque from 3,600 to 5,200 rpm, paired to an electronic CVT (E-CVT). This is augmented by a 1VM electric motor rated at 136 PS (134 hp or 100 kW) and 208 Nm, while a second 4NM electric motor on the rear axle with 54 PS (54 hp or 40 kW) and 121 Nm makes up the E-Four electric all-wheel drive system. Together, the total system output is 241 PS (237 hp or 177 kW). 2026 Toyota RAV4 Z (left), Adventure (right) Toyota claims a fuel consumption of either 22.5 or 22.9 km per litre for the RAV4, the latter applicable for the Adventure grade. It also notes that the E-Four system precisely controls front/rear driving force distribution between 100:0 and 20:80, with Trail and Snow terrain modes also available. In terms of dimensions, the Z measures 4,600 mm long, 1,855 mm wide, 1,680 mm tall and has a wheelbase of 2,690 mm. This grade is identified by its solid hammerhead face, honeycomb-mesh main grille, trapezoidal-shaped lower intake, recessed fog lamp enclosures, vertical-lined bumper garnishes and positioning of the Toyota badge ahead of the bonnet shutline. The Adventure, as its name implies, has a more off-roader appearance, with notable design cues being a rectangular-shaped grille featuring a large black bar, rugged-looking bumpers, vents beneath the headlamps as well as Toyota badge pointed forwards on a black trim piece. These differences are enough for the Adventure to be longer and wider overall at 4,620 mm and 1,880 mm respectively. 2026 Toyota RAV4 Z (left), Adventure (right) While it’s easy to tell both apart when viewing from the outside, the both grades share the same dashboard and general interior layout, with the differences being the colour scheme applied to specific components like the door cards and trim. Standard equipment for the RAV4 in Japan includes 18-inch wheels, bi-beam LED headlamps, synthetic leather seat upholstery, EV mode selector, a 12.3-inch instrument cluster display, dual-zone climate control and Toyota Safety Sense assistance systems. The Z improves upon the Adventure by having a coloured head-up display and an Electro-Shiftmatic gear selector. For extra money, Toyota offers a Lifestyle package for the Z that adds on a Modellista styling kit and various accessories for 538,340 yen (RM14k), or 586,760 yen (RM15k) if certain components are pre-painted. The Adventure gets an optional Outdoor package that is priced at 508,310 yen (RM13k).
