I showed up in Ojai, California expecting the usual soft-roader song and dance—nice styling, comfy seats, and an off-road button that mostly exists so you can feel outdoorsy while you want to stray off the tarmac. Instead, Toyota handed me the keys to the 2026 bZ Woodland, pointed toward a gorgeous trail that used to be Paul Walker’s ranch, and sent us on a sweet little off-road escapade. This Isn’t Just Toyota's Family EV… It Wants Dirt In Its Teeth 2026-toyota-bz-woodland-staticAt first glance, the bZ Woodland looks like Toyota took an EV crossover, gave it some rugged attitude, and called it a day. But once you get it off the tarmac, you realize it’s not pretending. It’s got standard dual-motor AWD, 375 hp, and Toyota says it’ll hit 0–60 in about 4.4 seconds. That’s nowhere close to being labeled a slow EV commuter. And that punch matters off-road too, because torque is your best friend when the trail gets spicy.Toyota Also, Toyota didn’t forget the basics. The 2026 bZ Woodland has 8.4 inches of ground clearance, and while it may not look like it’s towering over the earth, it’s got enough clearance to handle what I’d call beginner to mid-level real off-road stuff—ruts, uneven terrain, chunky dirt climbs, and those awkward angles that usually make crossovers whimper. X-MODE Makes Off-Roading Feel Like Cheating (In A Good Way) Toyota Here’s the part where the bZ Woodland won me over. Toyota’s X-MODE with Grip Control is straight-up magic for normal people who want to go off-roading without turning it into a daunting task.Everything from throttle response to traction and grip is managed by the system. All I had to do was point the wheel where I wanted to go and let the system sort out the messy stuff underneath.Toyota You can adjust your crawl speed on the fly by toggling a switch. So, if you want to creep slower through something sketchy, you can dial it back instantly. If you need a little more momentum, bump it up. It's off-roading made effortless, and honestly, that’s the whole point of a modern adventure machine. Off-road purists might disagree, but then again, they probably won't be a fan of an advanced EV crossover in the first place.Toyota Continuing with our little off-road excursion on the beautiful hills around Santa Barbara, we hit steep inclines on dirt, and the bZ Woodland climbed them like it had something to prove. No drama, no wheelspin panic, no weird hesitation. It just dug in and went. Then came the ruts and the bZ Woodland stayed composed.Even when the undulations got heavier, the ride stayed smooth and controlled. Toyota clearly tuned this thing's suspension with comfort in mind, and it shows. The available all-terrain tires helped too, as they added confidence and made the whole experience feel more confidence-inspiring. On Pavement, It’s Quick, Comfortable, And Actually Fun Toyota Once we rolled back onto the tarmac, the Woodland snapped back into daily driver mode almost as if it never left civilization. It’s very comfortable and quiet in the cabin, and then it's got another party trick that will wow drivers. When you put your foot down—it really moves. That 4.4-second sprint from 0-60 mph gives it real personality. This speaks volumes of what Toyota is trying to achieve with the Woodland. It’s not some numb appliance EV. It’s a proper enthusiast vehicle disguised as a family hauler. No, I did not say that incorrectly. The Woodland is being marketed as a larger, more adventure-ready version of the bZ. But aside from the off-road chops, this thing accelerates just as quickly as an Audi S3.Toyota Steering is nicely weighted, it handles well, and you can tell Toyota wanted it to feel secure and planted. You do feel the vehicle’s weight though, as it’s not light-footed like a hot hatch, but, it’s still fun, and it feels confident at speed. An Urban Crossover That Can Also Be An SUV When You Need It Toyota The bZ Woodland is an electric family crossover that behaves like a spacious sedan in the city, but can flip a switch and become a legitimate adventure-ready SUV when the weekend hits.It also looks classy, has the right rugged touches, and the quality feels top-notch. It’s still very much a city-friendly EV because it's smooth, quiet, comfortable. The best thing for families that like to go camping or a little more adventurous is that you genuinely don’t have to think twice. And for you guys wondering about the practical EV stuff, the bZ Woodland is rated for up to 281 miles of range (or 260 with the all-terrain tires), uses a NACS charging port, and Toyota says it can do 10–80% in around 30 minutes in ideal fast-charging conditions. Thats not the most ideal range for an Ev, but it's not bad either. It also has real utility cred, like up to 3,500 lbs of towing. Toyota Built A Punchy EV Wagon For People Who Actually Live Toyota The bZ Woodland isn’t trying to be the most hardcore off-roader in the world. It’s not here to pick a fight with a Wrangler on Bronco. Besides, Toyota already has the 4Runner for that. This vehicle is something way more useful in my opinion. If you want a comfortabe, high-tech car that can drive fast and take you off-road once in a while, then this is the modern car for a driver who wants it all.Starting at $46,750, the other options within the EV crossover/SUV space are the Chevy Blazer, or the Honda Prologue. However, the bZ Woodland seems to offer the best bang for buck, and the highest fun factor. So, for driving enthusiasts, this is an easy choice really. 2026 Toyota bZ Woodland Specs
