For a family SUV with genuine ambitions, that's a combination that's hard to argue with, and we had some time behind the wheel to consider it all. The Hurricane 4 Brings A New Heart To An Old Favorite 2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee L on a mountainMost importantly, the new Hurricane 4 engine setup sets the stage for everything else. With 324 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque, it feels more prepared to handle the mountain roads in the rain. I spent most of my time in a Grand Cherokee L, but that didn't impact how quick it felt underfoot. The eight-speed automatic matches it well, holding gears when you're pushing and stepping back when you're not.It gave me enough power to get up hills with ease, and the acceleration was smooth and pretty effortless.Beyond straight-up power numbers, Jeep also worked to improve the fuel economy. It now gets around 520 miles per tank, which will make a huge difference in the day-to-day.The big secret from the trip is that it sounds like something else is coming down the pipeline. A Hemi V8 Trailhawk, perhaps? There's also a V6 still available on lower Laredo trims for those who want it. I was pretty happy with the fancy Hurricane, but it's always nice to have options. But when I actually got behind the wheel, the Grand Cherokee was smooth and easy to drive. The steering felt accurate, and I was surprised by how good the turn radius was. This did a great job of soaking up the bumps, rocks, and uneven pavement as we traipsed along the California coast. I was pleasantly surprised, given how large (and long) the L trim was. For the target buyer, someone who wants a premium-feeling daily driver that can also tow a boat on the weekend, this is exactly the right character. The 2026 Grand Cherokee is trying to be the best version of itself, and it largely succeeds. Built For More Than The School Run (But Totally Has That Covered, Too) 2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee L cabinYou can buy a Jeep for your daily school and work activities, but the good news is that it's ready for more than that at any time. When properly equipped, the 2026 Grand Cherokee can tow a respectable 6,200 pounds. Lower trim levels get Quadra-Trac I 4x4 system combined with a brake lock differential for more capability, regardless of the terrain. The Grand Cherokee Summit trims get the Quadra-Trac II 4x4 system. The system adds a noticeable layer of composure and confidence, especially as road conditions deteriorate or surfaces become unpredictable. Instead of feeling like a typical all-wheel-drive setup designed purely for stability, Quadra-Trac II gives the Grand Cherokee a more planted, deliberate character that feels much more aligned with Jeep’s capability-first identity. Paired with Jeep’s Selec-Terrain system, you can leave it in Auto for normal driving or quickly switch between Sport, Snow, Sand/Mud, or Rock depending on conditions. In practice, it’s a straightforward setup that does the hard work for you, which is always appreciated. The Interior Is Where It Wins The Argument 2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee L front cabinThe Grand Cherokee comes in a few trim levels, but I spent the day in the Summit, which sits at the top. It comes with Palermo leather seats, 12-way driver/passenger seats, and a large touchscreen. In addition, it comes with an interactive front passenger display, giving your guests a little control over the radio and navigation. I did get to hop into a Limited trim as well, which wasn't quite as luxe but still had Capri leatherette seats, a great audio system, and plenty of space throughout.Amanda Cline / Hot CarsI was truly impressed with the materials throughout the cabin and the comfort of all the seats. I hopped into the captain's chairs in the second row and went all the way to the back, but every seat was comfortable. This would be an appropriate road trip SUV for a bunch of adults, which can be hard to find these days. You do lose a little cargo room with the L in favor of a third row, so you'll have to take that into consideration. Jeep understands exactly what this SUV is supposed to be. They are working hard to refine a formula that already works and to pay homage to what has worked in the past. The Hurricane engine adds a noticeable layer of energy, but more importantly, it makes the entire driving experience feel lighter and more responsive without sacrificing the comfort that Grand Cherokee buyers clearly value.The Grand Cherokee continues to succeed because it delivers a driving experience that feels easy, composed, and genuinely pleasant in everyday conditions. After some time behind the wheel, even in the rain, the updates feel less like forced evolution and more like Jeep making a very good SUV even better.
