Jeep's first electric off-roader is headed to dealerships, and the 2026 Recon Moabshows the brand isn't backing off trail capability to go electric. The Moab starts at $65,000 before a $1,995 destination charge, which places it toward the upper end of the Recon lineup.Power without a low rangeTwin electric motors put out 670 hp and 620 pound-feet of torque, sent through full-time all-wheel drive. Five drive modes are offered: Auto, Snow, Sand, Rock and Sport. There's no low-range gearing here. Electric motors produce enough torque at zero rpm to make a transfer case low range unnecessary for crawling. Ground clearance measures 9.1 inches, with approach and departure angles of 33.8 and 33.1 degrees and a 23.3-degree breakover angle. The Moab rides on 33-inch tires, wades through up to 24 inches of water, and can be armored with up to seven skid plates underneath. Recovery hooks front and rear are painted red. Suspension travel is generous enough to keep articulation over punishing terrain. On a Sonoma County first drive, the Moab reportedly cleared a rock garden, water fording, and dips that lifted individual wheels off the ground.Range is the tradeoffThe Recon Moab carries a 100.5-kWh battery on a 400-volt charging architecture, with an estimated 222 miles of range. That's short by current EV standards. Rivian's off-road-focused R1S All-Terrain is rated at 289 miles, and on-road-oriented midsize electric SUVs go further still: the Chevrolet Blazer SS EV up to 302 miles, the Ford Mustang Mach-E GT 280, and Tesla's Model X and Y at 329 and 327 miles respectively. None of those match the Recon's off-road hardware, and the capability adds weight that eats into range.Open-air and heritage cuesThe five-passenger Recon has removable doors, which weigh about 70 pounds each up front and 60 in the rear, plus removable side and rear windows. A power-folding fabric roof and panoramic sunroof are optional. Styling nods to the 1984 Cherokee with an upright windshield, square headlights, a non-functional seven-slot grille, short overhangs and a side-hinged tailgate with an exterior-mounted full-size spare. Inside, a 14.5-inch touchscreen and 12.3-inch instrument cluster handle the controls, with Alpine speakers relocated under the seats to preserve open-air sound. Jeep executives say a Recon Overland, badged a 2027 model with an estimated 240 miles of range, is due early next year.
