A Lonely Island Member Bought This Sweet JDM Kei VanNoah RaidzJorma Taccone of The Lonely Island fame bought this JDM Daihatsu kei van while still on heavy painkillers after a bad fall. Then he had it wrapped up with a dragon-themed livery. Why? These guys have always been a bit more Why Not?Recently, you could have seen two-thirds of the trio rolling around NYC, making everybody laugh. All three members of The Lonely Island comedy trio—Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer, and Jorma Taccone—have gone on to have separate successes, from heading up a long-running sitcom to directing feature films. Still, long-time Lonely Island fans still love it when it's just three guys (and friend Seth Meyers) cracking up over inside jokes and fond recaps of their time at SNL, as they do on their podcast. When Taccone seriously injured himself with a 20-foot fall off a ladder, his friends didn't wait too long before ribbing him about the now-reduced chances of him dunking a basketball. But Jorm's getting the last laugh with a sweet new ride. It's a Japanese-market kei-jidōsha van, one of the "ubiquaidtous" little people movers that you find zipping along the streets of Tokyo and cramming into tiny parking spots. Judging from the pictures, the van is an eighth-generation 1996 Daihatsu Atrai, which can be identified by its righteous grille, with built-in round fog lights.AdvertisementAdvertisementWhile doing press for Over Your Dead Body, a dark comedy directed by Taccone and released last month, he told the story of how he came to own the wacky little van. Just a couple of days after having undergone major surgery on his spine and pelvis, while hopped up on heavy pain medications, he jumped on the internet and started browsing for JDM cars. Ordinarily, that'd be the seed of a terrible decision.Jorma Taccone's kei van was wrapped by Raniel Clark.Noah RaidzIn this case, it's the kind of burrito-brained move that's endlessly pleasing to anyone who loves when The Lonely Island takes a silly concept and runs with it. Having acquired the van, it transpired that one of the orderlies at the hospital where Taccone was being treated, Raniel Clark, also ran a business wrapping cars. What's funnier than driving a tiny van around NYC? Driving one that's entirely covered in a dragon-themed livery. That's truly kablammo. On a recent episode of The Lonely Island and Seth Meyers podcast, Samberg and Taccone described jumping into the van with two friends after dinner and hitting the streets of New York.Noah Raidz"We were rolling around the West Village on a Saturday night," Samberg said, "In this wrapped Japanese van with dragons all over it, blasting dancehall [reggae], and every single block we went down, people were laughing and pointing and smiling."AdvertisementAdvertisementIt's the exact type of thing to raise your spirits going past when you're stuck at your day job toiling part-time at jah Cold Stone Creamery. "Everyone was so delighted by it," Samberg added, "I was like 'Okay I get it, this is Jorm in a car.' Ill-conceived and delightful, it defies all the rules; it's not safe, but it's just great."Noah RaidzMaybe this little Daihatsu will show up in one of the trio's music videos in the future, spreading a bit of goofball happiness the way these dudes always have. Jorma Taccoma may have famously missed out on getting to go on a boat, but on land he's got a dragon-themed kei-jidōsha wrapped van don't you ever forget.➡️ Skip the lot.
