A woman whose car was struck by a hit-and-run driver sparked a debate on whether the person who parked the car could ever be to blame. It turns out quite a few people think it can in fact be their fault. TikTok creator Alex Fugman (@justalexfugman) recently posted a video airing her grievances with the accident. After seeing footage of the crash, numerous other users noticed a detail that led them to believe she may be at fault. Alex begins her clip saying, “Very mad. Because somebody hit us last night. Cause we have the car parked in the street. We have the video, which I’ll show you in a second. But what makes me so mad about it is it was at 2:07. Their windshield wipers were on. So I’m just gonna assume they were drunk. And they could have hit somebody. And they could have hurt them." “So like, yes, my parked car, I’ll figure it out. And we’re gonna obviously try to find them,” she continues. Footage of the other driver ramming into her vehicle shows a quiet street with several parked cars, including Fugman’s. The detail that caught many viewers' attention is that her car is parked facing the wrong way. After hitting her vehicle, the other driver honked, then slowly backed up and drove away. Hit-And-Run Aftermath Fugman says she can't drive her car until it gets repaired. Then she asks for help. “But my question is: what kind of car is that? And I texted everybody on my street to see if any of them have an angle where we can get like, the license plates. I see it has a roof rack, which I know. I just, I think it’s black. And then is it an old Audi? Is it a Ford Edge? Is it one of those Infinitis? I can’t tell. Does anybody know?” Fugman then says she and her husband are going to drive around and look for the culprit. “We’re gonna go look right now cars that live near us. Because we think … we live in an area where you would be on our street if you were going home," she says. "So we’re gonna go look, drive around and look. But if you, we’re in Austin. So if you know anybody with that car, let me know.” Are People Sympathetic Or Do They Blame Her? Fugman’s video clocked over 1,500 comments. Many said they believe the car was a 2020 or 2021 Ford Escape. Tell us what you think! View Comments While several sympathized with her, others believed Fugman may be liable for the accident because she parked facing the wrong direction. “Unfortunately, your car is facing the wrong way on the street so you may be liable,” one wrote. Another agreed, writing, “Unfortunately because of the direction you are parked you will most likely be held partially liable.” Someone else also thought that the way Fugman parked could mean that she'd be partially responsible. “You may be illegally parked on your street if it’s not a one-way. Why are cars on both sides facing the same direction? You may have some liability if you are facing oncoming traffic on the left side," they wrote. Is It Legal To Park The Wrong Way On A Street? As many commenters noted, vehicles must be parked facing the same direction as traffic, whether it's a two-way or a one-way street. If your car gets hit when it's parked the wrong way, you could be partially liable. As the law firm Dormer Harpring notes, this will play a part in whether or not an insurance claim on a hit vehicle is accepted or denied. The firm says that “since the driver of the illegally parked car broke the law, he or she will most likely be responsible for paying for the accident.” It goes on to note, however, that most insurance companies will still contest that the other driver should be liable for some expenses. Fugman explained in her video that she lives in Austin, Texas. According to the Austin Chronicle, generally speaking, vehicles must be parked facing the direction of the flow of traffic.
