The New York Auto Showalways has a few big moments, but not everything there is trying to shock you. Some cars, trucks, and SUVs just make sense the second you see them get revealed, much like the 2027 Kia Seltos. Kia isn't chasing crazy numbers or trying to reinvent the wheel with its small SUV. It was one of only three brand reveals that morning, but something interesting has happened since then. Fans of the Telluride and other Kia vehicles have been very vocal about how much they like the new Seltos. The Kia Telluride has been an insanely successful vehicle for the brand, so can lightning strike twice? The Telluride Formula Is Still Working For Kia IMG_9140The timing here is what really makes this interesting, as the Telluride isn’t just something Kia got right once and moved on from. It’s still doing serious numbers right now. Sales are up 20% year-over-year, and it just posted its best first quarter ever with more than 35,000 units sold. The Telluride didn’t win people over with one big headline feature. It won because it got the fundamentals right. It looks good without trying too hard, the interior feels a step above what you expect for the price, and everything about it feels usable in a way that actually matters day to day. Kia is giving buyers what they want, and it shows. There’s also something to be said about how easy it is to recommend. You don’t have to explain it or justify it. It just makes sense to people the second they start comparing it to everything else in the segment. Kia didn’t stumble into that formula; they figured it out. So when you see another SUV in the lineup starting to reflect some of those same ideas, it’s probably not by accident. Kurt Kahl, Kia Design Center Chief Designer, told us, "We looked to the Telluride as the benchmark and asked how we could bring that same sense of confidence and substance into a subcompact SUV." The Seltos Starts To Feel Familiar In The Right Way Amanda Cline / HotCarsThe 2027 Kia Seltos doesn’t try to copy the Telluride outright, but it definitely pulls from it in ways that make sense. The overall shape is more upright, the proportions look a little more planted, and the design has more presence than before. It’s also bigger in important places, as it now has a longer wheelbase, more interior space, and a layout that feels less cramped than what you’d expect from something in this class. When I climbed in it during the NY Auto Show, it didn’t feel like a small SUV you’re settling for. It feels like something that’s been thought through a bit more carefully. Kahl told us, "When we began designing this new Seltos, the goal was simple: elevate everything," and that's exactly how it felt. Amanda Cline / HotCarsIt has dual 12.3-inch displays that span the dash, with an optional third screen for climate controls. The layout is clean, the tech is easy to use, and features like a panoramic roof, a surround-view monitor, and memory seating appear in a way that feels normal rather than surprising. It looks basic in some ways, but they aren't trying to reinvent the wheel here. It works, so let's use it. That’s the same trick the Telluride pulled. It didn’t overwhelm you with features; it just gave you the right ones. The Seltos is starting to do the same thing, just at a smaller scale.Since seeing the reveal, I've noticed a lot of positive feedback from the Seltos' target audience. "It looks amazing! I love the infotainment, and I like that it's not too big. It'll be worth the wait," one person said. Another one said, "Huge upgrade." While it might not be an enthusiast vehicle, I can see this being a pretty big seller for those who don't want the bigger Telluride. The 2026 Seltos starts under $24,000, placing it in a very different, much more affordable segment. Why This Strategy Could Work Again Amanda Cline / HotCarsThe small SUV segment is one of the most crowded spaces in the market, but it’s also where buyers tend to be the most practical. People aren’t chasing performance numbers here, they’re looking for something that fits into their lives without friction. Kia seems to understand that better than most right now, and the Seltos leans into it in a few key ways. The powertrain lineup is one of them. A naturally aspirated 2.0-liter for simplicity, a turbocharged 1.6-liter with around 190 horsepower for a little more punch, and now a hybrid option that adds efficiency without taking anything away from the driving experience. That’s a wide range for this segment, and it gives buyers flexibility without complicating things. The ICE version will be out sometime this summer, while the hybrid is slated for later this year. Amanda Cline / HotCarsCapability is another piece of it. Available all-wheel drive, multi-terrain modes, and up to 8.1 inches of ground clearance give it just enough edge to feel useful beyond the daily commute. It’s not trying to be something it’s not, but it’s also not limiting what you can do with it. And then there’s the part that’s harder to quantify. The way it looks, the way it feels inside, and the way everything comes together. That’s what made the Telluride work, and it’s what could make this work too. The Seltos doesn’t feel like a stretch or a gamble. It feels like something Kia already knows how to do, just applied to a different part of the market. If this works the way it looks like it will, Kia didn’t just update the Seltos; they figured out how to take what already works and fit it into a smaller, more accessible space. This might end up being the smallest version of Kia’s biggest idea.
