Buyers want something affordable, efficient, easy to park and capable of handling the occasional bad-weather commute without requiring a second mortgage. That makes the 2027 Kia Seltos and 2026 Toyota Corolla Cross interesting competitors. On paper, they appear somewhat similar. Both are relatively small crossovers with available all-wheel drive, practical interiors, and reasonable fuel economy. Both can serve as inexpensive daily transportation while providing a little more versatility than a conventional sedan.Cole AttishaView the 2 images of this gallery on the original articleAdvertisementAdvertisementAfter spending time with both, I found that they take very different approaches to the same basic formula.Surprisingly, the Kia is the one I found myself wanting to drive… a lot.ToyotaToyota Corolla Cross: The Sensible ChoiceThe 2026 Toyota Corolla Cross is essentially what happens when Toyota takes the Corolla formula and raises it a few inches. That isn't an insult. In fact, it's probably the entire point. The Corolla Cross is available with a conventional 2.0-liter four-cylinder, but the more interesting version is the Corolla Cross Hybrid, which produces 196 horsepower and comes standard with Toyota's electronic all-wheel-drive system. The hybrid is also exceptionally efficient, with an EPA rating of approximately 42 mpg combined.AdvertisementAdvertisementThat's impressive. It is also extremely Toyota. The Corolla Cross doesn't try very hard to entertain you. Instead, it quietly goes about its business, provides decent acceleration, gets excellent fuel economy and should theoretically continue doing so for a very long time.ToyotaView the 3 images of this gallery on the original articleThe exterior styling is actually one of the stronger aspects of the Corolla Cross. The higher trims look particularly good, with a modest but attractive design that gives the little crossover some visual presence without trying too hard.Inside, however, things become more conservative.Toyota configuratorView the 3 images of this gallery on the original articleAdvertisementAdvertisementThe materials are good, the seats are comfortable and Toyota's assembly quality is exactly what you'd expect. The available technology is competitive, too, including a 12.3-inch digital instrument display and a 10.5-inch multimedia screen on the upper trims. But there isn't much excitement here.More importantly, rear-seat and cargo space are merely adequate. A small family shouldn't have much trouble, but taller passengers or people who routinely carry large amounts of gear may find themselves wishing Toyota had stretched the Corolla Cross just a little farther.KiaEnter the 2027 Kia SeltosThen there's the completely redesigned 2027 Kia Seltos. It's (basically) an all-new vehicle. This is where things get interesting.Kia has taken the new Seltos and essentially shrunk the design language of its larger SUVs, including the Sorento and Telluride, into a smaller package. Somehow, it works.AdvertisementAdvertisementThe Seltos has a boxier, more substantial appearance than many vehicles in this class, while still retaining the cute proportions that make a subcompact crossover appealing.Cole AttishaView the 3 images of this gallery on the original articleIt's not pretending to be an off-road vehicle. It's not pretending to be a sports car. But it looks like it might be up for some fun. And that's the good stuff. The new Seltos also gets larger inside. Its wheelbase grows to 105.9 inches, and cargo capacity is approximately 27.8 cubic feet behind the rear seats, expanding to more than 64 cubic feet with the seats folded.AdvertisementAdvertisementThat's considerably more useful than the Corolla Cross. The interior is also one of my favorite aspects of the new Kia.KiaView the 3 images of this gallery on the original articleThe dashboard features Kia's latest display technology, including dual 12.3-inch screens, while thankfully retaining actual physical controls for important functions. I appreciate this more than I can explain. Touchscreens are great until you're trying to adjust something while driving and suddenly realize you're navigating through three menus to turn on the heated seats. The Seltos doesn't eliminate that problem entirely, but it minimizes it. The seats are comfortable, the materials are attractive, and the overall cabin feels more modern than the Corolla Cross. There's even an available panoramic sunroof.KiaView the 2 images of this gallery on the original articleThe Performance DifferenceThis is where the two vehicles separate themselves.AdvertisementAdvertisementFor this comparison, I drove the top versions of both vehicles. The Seltos was equipped with its 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder producing 190 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The Corolla Cross Hybrid produces 196 horsepower, but horsepower doesn't tell the entire story. The Kia feels more athletic. The turbocharged engine delivers substantially more torque, and you can feel it. Acceleration is stronger, passing is easier and the Seltos responds more enthusiastically when you push it into a corner. The Corolla Cross Hybrid isn't slow. In fact, its electric assistance gives it a surprisingly smooth and immediate response around town. It is an excellent commuter.AdvertisementAdvertisementBut if you enjoy driving, the Kia wins. That's an important distinction because I don't think every vehicle needs to be a sports car. However, there's something satisfying about driving a small crossover that actually responds when you ask it to do something. The Seltos does.ToyotaView the 2 images of this gallery on the original articleWhat About Off-Road?Let's keep our expectations reasonable. Neither of these vehicles belongs on the Rubicon Trail. They are tall hatchbacks with AWD (all-wheel drive) and look kind of off-road capable. Both, however, are perfectly capable of handling a dirt road, a muddy campground entrance or a snow-covered road that would make a front-wheel-drive sedan considerably less comfortable.AdvertisementAdvertisementThe all-wheel-drive systems are also quite different. The Seltos uses a mechanical AWD system that can distribute power between the front and rear wheels. There's also a locking function designed to help in particularly slippery conditions.Related: Subaru Forester Is Crushing the Mazda CX-5 in 2026 SalesThe Corolla Cross Hybrid takes a different approach. Its rear wheels are powered by an electric motor, allowing Toyota's electronics to determine how much assistance is necessary. The Toyota system is remarkably clever and works well for the situations it was designed to handle. But neither vehicle should be mistaken for a serious off-roader.AdvertisementAdvertisementThat's perfectly fine. Most buyers don't need a vehicle capable of climbing over boulders. They need something that can get them to the ski resort, campsite or trailhead without requiring a rescue helicopter. Both should accomplish that.KiaView the 2 images of this gallery on the original articleThe Price QuestionThis is where things get complicated. The Seltos has a lower entry price, starting around $25,000, while the Corolla Cross starts somewhat higher. The Kia becomes considerably more expensive when you move into the upper trims, particularly when you want the turbocharged engine and all-wheel drive. That's my biggest complaint about the Seltos. The 1.6-liter turbo is arguably the engine that best suits the personality of this vehicle, yet Kia reserves it for the top trim. I'd love to see that powertrain offered farther down the range.Toyota, meanwhile, has the advantage of offering its hybrid powertrain in multiple configurations and has built a strong reputation for hybrid durability.Kia counters with an excellent powertrain warranty. Thus, the value equation isn't nearly as simple as looking at the sticker price.Kristen BrownView the 2 images of this gallery on the original articleFinal ThoughtsIf you asked me which one I'd recommend to someone who simply wants dependable, efficient transportation, the Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid would be an easy recommendation. It's efficient, comfortable, easy to drive and backed by Toyota's long-established reputation for durability. For someone who spends most of their time commuting, that's a pretty compelling combination. But if you asked me which one I'd rather drive? That's the 2027 Kia Seltos. The Kia feels more substantial, has a more interesting interior, offers better cargo and rear-seat practicality and, most importantly, has more personality. The turbocharged engine gives it an enthusiasm that the Corolla Cross simply doesn't have.Recently, I was asked what I'd recommend for a young college graduate living on the East Coast who has to deal with snow, rain and the occasional flooded road.Related: Is the 2026 Mini Countryman SE Worth $50,000? Here's My Honest ReviewMy first thought was a Subaru Crosstrek. Then I drove the Seltos. Now I'm not so sure. The Toyota is the logical choice. The Kia is the one that makes you think about the decision a little longer. And that's probably the biggest compliment I can give the Seltos. In a segment filled with sensible little appliances, Kia has managed to build something that is practical without being boring.I just wish Kia would let more buyers have the good engine without making them pay for the most expensive version.Related: 2026 Toyota 4Runner Wave Maker vs 2026 Jeep Wrangler Willis 392This story was originally published by Autoblog on Aug 24, 2026, where it first appeared in the Cars section.
