Image: WebastoUnlike internal combustion engine vehicles, electric vehicles cannot utilise waste heat generated by the motor to heat the interior. This is because electric motors operate so efficiently that they produce minimal waste heat. As a result, alternative solutions such as high-voltage heaters (HVH) or heat pumps, which draw in and warm outside air, are required.Supplier Webasto has now introduced a new heating system for electric commercial vehicles. Named ‘Air Flow’, this system is based on the PTC (Positive Temperature Coefficient) principle. It is self-regulating, which enhances safety by maintaining moderate surface and warm air temperatures, according to Webasto. The heater draws its energy directly from the traction battery, which – like other heating systems for electric vehicles – reduces the vehicle’s range. This is particularly important to consider when planning charging schedules during winter. The ‘Air Flow’ system is modular, allowing multiple units to be combined. A single heater module measures 200 x 155 x 150 millimetres (L x W x H) and delivers up to 700 watts of heating power. Additionally, pre-configured systems consisting of two or three modules are available, providing up to 1,400 or 2,100 watts of system power, respectively. The modules do not need to be installed side by side; instead, individual modules can be placed decentralised throughout the vehicle. Webasto states that this flexibility is particularly advantageous for electric vehicles with limited installation space or those requiring different temperature zones. The heat can be easily and precisely distributed throughout the vehicle via air ducts, with various outlet options available. Heating power can be adjusted automatically or manually in three stages to quickly reach and maintain target temperatures. A range of manual and digital control elements are available for operation. Additionally, app-based control via Bluetooth is in development. Depending on the chosen control system, various heating programmes and timer options with customisable settings are possible. The question remains: who is the target audience for this heating system? In its press release, Webasto refers generally to electric commercial vehicles, which range from electric vans to e-buses and heavy-duty e-trucks. However, the product page explicitly states that the heater is ‘developed for the growing market of electric light commercial vehicles (LCVs)’ and was specifically ‘designed for small to medium-sized electric vehicles’. The most practical application is likely in electric delivery vans used by parcel and logistics services, as PTC air heaters can provide rapid heat compensation during frequent door openings.webasto.com (Press release), webasto.com (Product page)
