A couple of tire technicians use a skit to poke fun at customers who want bald tires rotated. Here’s why that’s not the greatest idea. TikTok creator EliteVoiceTV (@elitevoicetv) posted the skit last week. In the on-screen text, he explains the premise: "He wants to rotate bald tires." The technician behind the camera tells the "customer" that his service is complete. "Sir, so, we checked your vehicle," he says. "We did an oil change. I did not do the tire rotation because your tires are already 1 and 2/32"." That means the tread on the customer’s tires is lower than 2/32 inches deep, which meets the legal standard for baldness. The customer isn’t deterred. "Can we just do the rotation?" he asks. The technician denies his request. "We don’t rotate tires when they’re bald and they need to be replaced," he says. The customer persists. "If I see some lines on there, that should be enough," he argues, pointing to his bald head. The technician latches onto this metaphor to explain why he can’t do the job. "Would you get a haircut right now?" he asks. The customer replies, "I don’t need a haircut." The technician says, "Exactly my point. You don’t need a haircut. Your tires look just like that. We would be wasting time rotating the tires. It’s a waste of money, too." Gallery: Michelin Uptis Airless Tires Tire Technicians Love the Skit In the comments section, viewers who work in the industry clearly approved of the skit. "I love when a rotate-every-oil-change customer comes in with 2/32 or less," one person wrote. "Sorry, can’t touch ‘em." "My shop does it for free and I see this 100%," said the second person. "My shop says do it anyway. I be rotating them tires and the customer gonna be seeing Jesus next." "They really don’t care till the cop gives them a ticket or insurance uses it against them in an accident claim," said a third person. Another technician said they flat-out refuse to rotate bald tires. "It’s a safety issue," they wrote. "I don’t care about the commission. That’s someone’s son, daughter, dad, mom, etc." The Perils of Driving on Bald Tires When the tread on your tires degrades to 2/32" or less, they are considered bald. That makes it harder for you to steer and stop the vehicle, increasing your likelihood of accidents and hydroplaning. Bald tires are also more likely to blow out, which is a serious safety hazard. And if you are in an accident related to bald tires, you’re going to be in trouble with your insurance and potentially even facing legal liability. In some states, driving on bald tires can even constitute reckless driving, which is a misdemeanor offense. Last year, a Pennsylvania man driving on bald tires at a high rate of speed caused a crash that resulted in injury to another person. That led to aggravated assault by vehicle and careless driving charges. According to the news report, the tires on the man’s truck had no measurable tread.
