Image Credit: SpeedSquad / InstagramMotorcycle thefts involving high-value machines have become increasingly common in the UK, but stealing one isn't always as simple as riding away. In some cases, thieves discover too late that operating certain motorcycles requires more than just confidence. That appeared to be the case when two men attempted to steal what appeared to be a BMW R 1200 GS. Despite their efforts, they were unable to get the motorcycle moving and were eventually forced to abandon the theft altogether.Although the owner avoided losing the motorcycle, the failed theft still left it damaged after one of the suspects dropped it and walked away without putting it back on its stand.AdvertisementAdvertisementWhile insurance may cover the repairs, the owner was at least fortunate to find the bike exactly where it had been parked. The incident was captured on video and shared on Instagram, giving viewers a close look at how the attempted theft unfolded.Rookie Thieves Drop the Idea and the MotorcycleImage Credit: SpeedSquad / InstagramA video shared on Instagram by SpeedSquad showing two motorcycle-borne thieves attempting to steal a BMW R 1200 GS has gone viral, racking up more than 495,000 views in one day.The footage began with one suspect standing beside the motorcycle while the other climbed onto the GS and, with help from his accomplice, broke the handlebar lock within seconds. Their next challenge, however, was getting away on the bike, which retailed for well over $15,000 when new in the U.S.One of the suspects then tried to lift the heavily leaning adventure bike off its side stand, but it quickly became apparent that he was unfamiliar with handling a large motorcycle as he struggled to control its weight.AdvertisementAdvertisementAfter retracting the side stand, he attempted to push the BMW forward, but it refused to budge. One possible explanation is that the bike was left in gear rather than neutral, locking the rear wheel and preventing it from rolling.Another possibility is that the owner had fitted a front disc lock that remained in place. Two broken pieces visible on the ground near the front wheel suggest the thieves may have tried to force it open but failed to remove it completely. The suspect made several unsuccessful attempts to push the motorcycle before apparently realizing they were running out of time. Fearing they might be caught, the pair abandoned the theft and fled the scene. In frustration, the thief let the BMW crash onto its side instead of placing it back on its stand, leaving the owner with damage but, fortunately, not a stolen motorcycle. It is not known whether the suspects were ever identified or arrested, or whether the owner pursued legal action. Despite the damage, the owner still had his motorcycle at the end of the day.
