Under India's Designs Act 2000, a registered design protects the visual appearance of an article — shape, configuration, ornamentation — and nothing underneath it. There are no specifications in the filing. No motor, no battery, no chassis. A company can register a design purely to stop someone else copying the look, and never sell the thing. What the filing does prove is that somebody paid an Indian agent to protect an Indian right, which is not something you do for a market you're ignoring.The 50 kW questionThe second design corresponds to a machine VinFast has already shown at home. That gap between 18 and 50 is the whole story of electric motorcycle specs. Rated power is what the motor can hold indefinitely. Peak is what it will give you for a handful of seconds before thermal management starts pulling it back. European licence categories are written around the rated figure. Marketing is written around the peak.So when VinFast says "up to 50,000 W," that is a peak number, and it should be read next to a peak number. India's current halo electric motorcycle, the Ultraviolette F77 Mach 2, publishes 30 kW peak, 100 Nm and 155 km/h from a 10.3 kWh pack. VinFast is claiming 20 kW more peak power and 25 km/h less top speed. That combination doesn't happen by accident. It points to short gearing, a conservative electronic limiter, or a motor-controller package that runs out of thermal headroom before it runs out of revs. My money's on the limiter — 130 km/h is a suspiciously round number.Why the swap network doesn't save this bikeVinFast's actual competitive weapon isn't power, it's the energy ecosystem, and the Indonesian rollout shows exactly how it works. The company opened 20 dealerships across Jakarta, Bandung, Medan, Makassar and elsewhere in July, selling the Evo, Feliz II and Viper with dual under-seat compartments taking two 1.5 kWh LFP packs, 145–150 km on a pair, and a year of free swapping at V-Green stations capped at 20 swaps a month.AdvertisementAdvertisementNow do the arithmetic on that architecture with a sport bike attached. Three kilowatt-hours total, pulling 50 kW, is a discharge rate north of 16C. Standard LFP swap packs sized for a commuter scooter are not built for that, and no amount of software cleverness changes cell chemistry. A 50 kW motorcycle needs a fixed, larger, higher-voltage pack with liquid or forced-air cooling — which is precisely why Honda gave the WN7 a fixed 9.3 kWh battery and a water-cooled motor with an integrated inverter rather than a swappable setup.Which means the sport bike sits outside VinFast's own ecosystem. Whatever advantage the swap network gives its scooters in Jakarta or Hanoi, the motorcycle doesn't inherit it. It has to win on the same terms as everyone else: price, range, service, and whether the thing survives an Indian summer. But volume and opportunity aren't the same thing, and the policy clock is unhelpful.The PM E-DRIVE scheme currently sets the terminal date for registered electric two-wheelers at 31 July 2026 — this month. On an electric two-wheeler, the pack is most of the value and all of the resale risk. A number on a spec sheet is free. A warranty costs the manufacturer money, which is why it's the only figure that tells you how serious anyone is.
