Image: VinFastWhile most automakers are making their SUVs bigger with each generation, VinFast has taken the opposite route. The all-new VF 8 is smaller than the first-generation model in nearly every dimension. Measuring 4.70 m in length, 1.87 m in width and 1.67 m in height, the second-generation model is 4.9 cm shorter, 6.2 cm narrower and 3 mm taller.VinFast has shortened the wheelbase of the VF 8 by 11 cm, bringing it to 2.84m. The second-generation model may be much smaller than the model it replaces, but it has a noticeably more dynamic character, reminiscent of the VF 7 compact SUV positioned below it.All-new exteriorAt the front, the all-new VF 8 adopts a lower and more steeply sloping bonnet along with a more pronounced nose section featuring a large gloss-black closed-off panel. The headlamps are more compact but carry a bolder light signature, with eyebrow-like three-segment DRLs integrated into their upper section.Wider DRL extensions along the faux upper grille visually connect the headlamps with the central “V” logo. An A-shaped functional grille at the bottom serves the cooling needs of the core components, such as the battery pack, motor and power electronics. Sculpted vertical air vents at the outer edges of the bumper add a sportier appearance to the front end. Sharper character lines along the quarter panels and doors, a sleeker and more angular greenhouse, and semi-recessed door handles lend the redesigned model a more sophisticated appearance. The rear end adopts a smoother and more rounded appearance, particularly around the tailgate and bumper. Slim tail lights visually create a “V”-shaped light signature around the brand logo. A large gloss-black panel surrounding the tail lights enhances the sense of width.Evolutionary interiorInside, the VF 8 has retained a highly minimalist layout and continues relying heavily on digital controls. The AC vents integrated into the sleek dashboard have become noticeably slimmer. Unlike in the old model, VinFast now includes an instrument cluster. A squircle-shaped steering wheel with a broader and more angular centre pad, a column-type electric gear selector and a cleaner bridge-type centre console are also among the key interior changes.VinFast has replaced the 15.6-inch touchscreen infotainment system with a smaller 12.9-inch unit. The company also equips the latest model with a dual-zone automatic climate control system, a six-way power driver’s seat with a memory function and an eight-speaker sound system. It uses a new E/E architecture to enable faster and smoother system responses. On the safety front, VinFast offers a 360-degree camera and a range of advanced driver assistance systems such as Highway Driving Assist, Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Keeping Assist and Blind Spot Warning. The company is targeting a five-star ASEAN NCAP rating.New platformVinFast has developed the all-new VF 8 on a completely new chassis and has equipped it with Frequency Selective Dampers (FSD) on both axles for improved ride comfort and body control. The company offers only one configuration, featuring a front-mounted motor that generates 170 kW and 330 Nm of torque, paired with a 60.13 kWh battery pack.Charging the battery pack from 10 per cent to 70 per cent takes less than 30 minutes. When fully charged, it can deliver an NEDC range of up to 500 kilometres. VinFast could introduce more advanced configurations that offer both all-wheel-drive capability and a much longer range, targeting European and North American markets.PricingVinFast has priced the all-new VF 8 at 999 million dong (approximately €32,650) and will begin accepting pre-orders on 27 May.
