The United Kingdom has far more public EV charger points than gas (petrol) pump nozzles, and yet many residents may not fully understand this fact. It may take a while for public perception to catch up to reality. “More than 118,000 public charge points are now available nationwide compared with around 60,800 fuel pumps, according to new data released alongside the government-backed Electric Road Trip campaign.” The UK will continue to add more public EV chargers, lest anyone get confused and think the limit has been reached. Additionally, as more EVs are purchased and they replace petrol and diesel vehicles, the number of petrol stations will continue to decline. In fact, last year I conducted an interview in which it was stated that gas (petrol) nozzles have been steadily decreasing for a while. “The number of petrol stations in Britain has been in steady decline since the 1960s. According to the Petrol Retailers Association (PRA), there were 38,000 filling stations in 1964. That number halved between 1992 and 2010 — dropping from 18,000 to around 9,000 — and has since stabilized at roughly 8,500.” The UK government has publicly stated that many, many more public EV chargers will be installed. “Charging will continue to become even easier as the government rolls out an additional 100,000 new local public chargers over the coming years and provides funding for and reforms planning rules so residents without private driveways can install home chargers more easily and cheaply, enabling them to charge up for as little as 2p per mile.” So, it’s clear now there are far more public EV chargers than petrol nozzles already and the gap between them will only grow going forward. In my interview linked above, the source stated it is actually possible there might be no more petrol stations in Britain in about 12 years. There are also hundreds of thousands of home EV chargers in the UK. “But the analysis highlights the significance of private charging networks, revealing that the UK currently has 809,181 home chargers….” Most EV charging happens at home, which is much more convenient than having to drive a gas or diesel vehicle to a petrol station. Will we see the end of UK gas and diesel fuel stations in our lifetime?
