GR GT Production Won't Meet Demand 'By Design'toyotaDemand for the Toyota GR GT is reportedly, and perhaps unexpectedly, rather high. High enough, even, that Toyota believes it won't be able to sell an example to everyone who wants one.A new report from The Drive delves into the details about how many GR GTs are being allocated to the United States, and it sounds like some people might wind up disappointed. "We're not going to have enough to meet demand, and that's by design," said Andrew Gilleland, Toyota senior vice president of automotive operations.toyotaGilleland added that the U.S. will receive about 200–250 GR GTs, and he told The Drive that "the first allocation is already sold." The mention of first there hints that it might not be impossible for future interested parties to grab one down the line, however. Even if the first 200 to 250 cars have folks currently interested or even paid up, it wouldn't be out of the question for Toyota to ultimately produce more than it's initially planning.AdvertisementAdvertisementJust during The Quail, a Motorsports Gathering itself, Gilleland said it had more than 150 potential buyers sit down with company representatives to configure their GR GT. Toyota is also looking to be selective in who it sells its GR GT to. "It's a passion project, and made because Akio [Toyoda] wants a world-class performance car," Gilleland said. "We don't want to sell cars to flippers, we only want people who are going to drive it."toyotaOther automakers have tried to allocate its cars in a similar manner. Ford famously forced its GT buyers to apply for the opportunity to buy one, and additionally sign a no-sale contract that barred them from selling the car during their first two years of ownership. (This reportedly caused a headache for one John Cena.) Toyota didn't elaborate on how it would go about preventing flippers from making a quick buck on the GR GT, but we'd be surprised to see anything as strict as Ford's methods.Toyota divulged more details about its GR GT during Monterey Car Week this year, providing us a deeper dive on the tech inside this monstrous supercar.
