Toyotahas opened orders for the Hilux BEV, the company's first fully electric pickup truck and its first body-on-frame electric vehicle. The electric Hilux is now available to order in the UK, starting at around $56,500, and in Australia, starting at around $51,500 before on-road costs. There is no US availability planned at this time. What Is the Hilux BEVThe Toyota Hilux is one of the best-selling pickup trucks in the world, with over 27 million units sold across seven decades. The ninth-generation model finally gets an all-electric version. Toyota calls the design "Tough and Agile" with slim LED headlights and a connecting light bar across the front. The Toyota name replaces the emblem up front. Power comes from a dual-motor permanent all-wheel-drive setup producing 278 horsepower and 348 lb-ft of torque. Towing capacity is rated at over 3,700 lbs. The battery is a 59.2 kWh water-cooled lithium-ion unit with 80 cells arranged in five modules.Off-Road CapabilityToyota built actual off-road hardware into the Hilux BEV. The electric axles are reinforced with special undercovers for trail use. The truck is Toyota's first EV equipped with Multi-Terrain Select, the same system used on the Land Cruiser and 4Runner. Five drive modes cycle automatically based on terrain conditions. Wading depth is 700mm, matching the gas-powered Hilux models. Ground clearance drops slightly to 212mm due to the battery pack under the floor.Range and ChargingWLTP-rated range is up to 160 miles per charge in combined driving. City cycle range reaches up to 236 miles. The truck supports DC fast charging at up to 125 kW, which takes the battery from 10 percent to 80 percent in about 30 minutes. For a work truck that hauls equipment to a job site and back, 160 miles of range covers most daily driving. Longer trips into remote areas require more planning, as public charging infrastructure varies widely in rural and backcountry regions.Interior and TechInside, the cabin matches the updated Land Cruiser layout with a 12.3-inch central infotainment screen and a 12.3-inch driver display with four layout options. Toyota's third-generation T-Mate safety suite is standard and includes blind-spot monitoring, safe exit assist, and parking support brake. Electric power steering adds lane assist, which is a first for the Hilux line. Will It Come to the United StatesNo. Toyota does not sell the gas-powered Hilux in the US market, and the BEV version will not be coming either. Current import tariff policies make it more expensive for Toyota to sell foreign-made vehicles in the US. American truck buyers looking for a Toyota EV will have to wait for a domestic product. Toyota does have three electric SUVs available in the US market and a three-row Highlander BEV expected later this year. For off-road truck fans outside the US, the Hilux BEV is a significant step. It is a purpose-built body-on-frame electric truck with real trail capability built in. That combination has been missing from the EV market. The Hilux BEV changes that for markets where it is sold.Sourceshttps://electrek.co/2026/06/12/toyota-opens-orders-first-body-on-frame-ev-under-60000/
