Continuing its run as the best-selling electric vehicle (EV) in Malaysia is the Proton eMas 7, with the model yet again the chart topper in the month of October 2025. According to the latest data from the road transport department (JPJ), 742 units of the SUV were registered last month, 15 units less than the 757 units sold in September. It of course remains the category leader, and by a wide margin. As of October, year-to-date (YTD) numbers for the model stands at 6,954 units, well more than double that of the second-placed vehicle, in this case the BYD Sealion 7, which was placed third last month (433 units, 3,142 units YTD). Ahead of it was the BYD Atto 3, with 464 units (3,129 units YTD), while fourth spot was taken by another BYD, the Seal 6 EV, with 386 units (444 units YTD). In fifth was the BYD Atto 2 (325 units, 1,076 units YTD), making four of the top five all from the same brand. The Zeekr 7X moved up one spot from the previous month into sixth, with 323 units registered in October, and it finally enters the overall top 20, with 557 units sold YTD. Placed seventh was the iCaur 03 (310 units), and that was good enough to get it into the top 20, sitting at 18th place (345 units YTD). Dropping into eighth was the Tesla Model Y (246 units), although it remains fourth in the YTD chart with 2,680 units sold. The Xpeng G6 (120 units, 647 units YTD) was placed ninth, and in 10th spot was the BYD M6 (88 units, 1,349 units). Next, we have the Denza D9 (82 units, 932 units YTD) in 11th, and in 12th place was the Tesla Model 3 (74 units), which dropped eight places in the monthly chart from last month. Despite this, it’s still the fifth best-selling EV in overall terms. In 13th was the Leapmotor C10 (73 units, 351 units YTD), its revised pricing finally improving its take-up. Placing 14th and 15th respectively was the Zeekr 009 (62 units, 689 units YTD) and the BYD Seal (52 units, 938 units YTD). An electric pick-up is in 16th, with the EV version of the Maxus T90 reecording 50 units for the month. From here until 20th in the monthly list, you’ll find the Xpeng X9 (42 units, 494 units YTD) in 17th and the Chery Omoda E5 (32 units, 586 units YTD) in 18, with the final two positions filled by Porsches, the Macan (32 units) and the Taycan (30 units, 336 units). The composition of the monthly chart highlights the inroads made by Chinese brands in electrification, with 15 (or 16, if you want to count the native origin of the eMas 7) of the models in it being from Chinese automakers. Of these, six are from one brand, and that’s BYD. The Proton eMas 5 should bullet into the list soon, of course, but in any case, with import and excise duty exemptions for CBU EVs set to end on December 31, expect there to be a rush for registrations in the run-out period, so the lower half of the chart will definitely see a lot of movement before the year is out.
