Plymouth may have closed down in 2001, but did you know that a Plymouth (of sorts) was sold in 2004? The Plymouth brand was introduced in 1928 and went on to create some of the most legendary muscle cars of the '60s, with one being seen as the last great Golden Era model. When the company went out of business at the turn of the millennium, Chrysler wasn't satisfied to just let it fizzle out, bringing back a Plymouth GTX tribute that most people have forgotten about. One of these limited edition homages has just appeared on Bringatrailer.com, and we are sure glad to see it again... The Dodge Ram 1500 Hemi GTX Is The Muscle Car Tribute Most People Forgot About Bring A Trailer The mid 2000s were a time when muscle cars returned to America with the S197 Ford Mustang and new Dodge Charger. Sadly, it was too late for Plymouth, with the brand being discontinued after 2001. Plymouth's owner, Chrysler, hadn't quite forgotten the iconic carmaker, and three years after its demise, turned to Dodge to pay tribute. With the sixth-generation Charger two years away, the models that were still packing a Hemi in Dodge showrooms were the Durango and Ram. Dodge decided that the Ram would make a novel (and unlikely) homage to the Plymouth GTX of the '60s and early '70s. The Dodge Ram Became An Unlikely Tribute To Plymouth's Finest Hour Bring A Trailer Dodge threw its former sister company some love in 2004 with the creation of the Ram 1500 Hemi GTX. This truck was a tribute to the classic Plymouth GTX muscle car. An upscale muscle car based on the Belvedere, the GTX, which ran from 1967 to 1971, was known as the "gentleman's muscle car" because of its refinement and options-heavy spec.Regular Ram cab trucks were sent to LA West Luxury Vehicles in LaGrange, Indiana, to be finished in classic Mopar "High Impact" colors like Plumb Crazy, Hemi Orange, and Sublime. Other muscle car-style goodies were added, including a cowl hood, a body-color tonneau cover with a rear spoiler, black Hemi GTX graphics, chrome 20″ Prime wheels, interior accents, and a cat-back exhaust system. The Truck For Sale Is Pure '60s Muscle Car Style Bring A TrailerWhich leads us to the recent Bringatrailer find. These trucks are rare (the seller says that just 433 were built) so it's cool to see one cropping up for sale. This Ram GTX (which started out as a Ram SLT) is finished in Hemi Orange to honor the 5.7-liter Hemi V8 under the hood. That huge 345 horsepower and 375 lb-ft of torque motor drives the rear wheels through a five-speed automatic transmission. You'll be looking at 60 mph in around seven seconds, which is pretty decent for a truck 20 years ago.The truck is equipped with four-wheel disc brakes, air conditioning, cruise control, and a CD stereo. It was purchased by the seller in 2025, and has been used sparingly, with just 13,000 miles on the clock. For peace of mind, you get assorted literature, a certificate of authenticity, an accident-free Carfax report, and a clean Louisiana title in the seller’s name. A serialized plaque in the driver’s door jamb shows that this truck is number 20 of a reported 433 of Hemi GTX conversions for the model year. Why The Dodge Ram 1500 Hemi GTX Is An Important Part Of US Motoring History Bring A Trailer With three days to go, this truck is hovering at just over $7,000. It is a wonderful glimpse at that curious time just between when brands like Plymouth were being retired, and the great renaissance of American muscle cars. Had Plymouth hung on for half a decade longer, perhaps it too would still be around like Dodge, making modern interpretations of classic muscle cars. The fact that a rear-drive Hemi truck was one of the closest things to a muscle car at the turn of the century is also a cool insight into the market 25 years ago. If you want a perfect moment in time, then a Plymouth-themed Dodge truck could well be it. It is undoubtedly one of the coolest special edition Rams out there.Sources: Bringatrailer.com
