In January, GM confirmed that it would be launching the latest generation of its full-sized trucks later this year. The automaker might not be ready to show us the goods just yet, but that's not stopping the CarBuzz spies from getting you a better look. The latest is our best look yet at GMC's off-road ready version of the Sierra 1500. It's the 2027 GMC Sierra AT4X. Bigger Tires, Meaner Looks CarBuzz/Valnet The most obvious new detail on this latest Sierra 1500 AT4X is the Goodyear Wrangler Territory MT tires. The 35-inch tires on 18-inch wheels give the truck an extra two inches of tire when compared with the old truck. The taller tires can help clear larger obstacles. When aired down, they allow for more sidewall flex without pinching the wheel, and a larger contact patch on the ground. We can also see that GMC is giving the new trucks a tougher, more HD-like appearance. That's apparent with the fender flares, which are more squared-off than on the current truck and get reflectors like the ones on the current HD Sierra and Silverado models.CarBuzz/Valnet There are more aggressive cut-outs in the front bumper in front of the tires. We've seen GM do a bumper like this before on Chevrolet ZR2 models, but the AT4X hasn't gotten it before. The cut-out makes it easier for you to get a tire on a rock or log without striking the bumper first. This truck is higher-riding than other 2027 GM prototypes we've seen. The last AT4X models came with a two-inch lift versus standard, and the new truck will probably have the same.We can also see GM's Multimatic DSSV dampers poking out of the wheel arches. These exceptionally well-tuned shocks control the body of the truck when you're off-roading as well as on the highway. They make off-road more comfortable than other vehicles. What Engine Will Hide Under Those Power Bulges? CarBuzz/Valnet The truck has a hefty-looking front skid plate, and there is more underbody protection covering some of the more sensitive parts. The exhaust outlets are also tucked most of the way into the bumper. That's good for clearance when transitioning on or off of steep hills, and ahead of the bumper, the exhaust seems to be higher up than the full-sized spare tire.A hood with two big bulges probably isn't giving the engine any extra clearance, but it does look good. GM's newest small-block V8 will go under there, and should offer more displacement than the old 6.2 as well as more power. The truck has front tow hooks, but there aren't any in the rear. GMC might be saving that for a possible AEV Bison, like it offers on the current truck.GMC's camouflage still hides some of the bodylines, but look closely, and you can see more of the character of the truck than we've seen before. The curve in the lower doors, for instance, appear almost the opposite of the current truck. Plus, there's a sharper line just under the handles instead of above. This is also the first time we've seen the grille without a massive fabric cover. It's still very heavily wrapped, but GMC's familiar motif and vertical bars are apparent.GMC still hasn't confirmed a date for the new truck. The auto show schedule is mostly done until the fall, so we wouldn't want to pin it on a show like LA at the end of November. If past trends continue, GMC and Chevrolet will get their own reveals, most likely happening in stand-alone events sometime this summer.2027 GMC Sierra 1500 AT4 (10)
