Last year was all about American supercar performance. The Ford Mustang GTD and the Chevrolet Corvette ZR1X shook the status quo of high-performance cars when they went to the Nurburgring and broke some very impressive records. This year, things could be brought back to normal though, as the engineers from Affalterbach, Germany are ready to unleash a monster. UPDATE: 2026/03/30 04:54 EST BY JARED SOLOMON This article has been updated to include newly observed Nürburgring lap times suggesting the Ford Mustang GTD may be significantly faster than previously reported.Mercedes-AMG has just revealed a street-legal and track-focused machine with massive ambitions, which is how we knew the response was always going to be. One AMG Platform, Two Extreme Supercars amg-track-sport-image-2 At the center of AMG’s plan is the Concept AMG GT Track Sport, a wild prototype that’s no longer just a design study. This will be the foundation for not one, but two upcoming high-performance machines. The first will be the next-generation Mercedes-AMG GT3 and following closely will be the new Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series. One is built purely for racing, the other is designed to bring that same intensity to the road. The Most Extreme Black Series Yet! AMG isn’t being subtle about its intentions. The new Black Series is being positioned as the most extreme version yet, raising the bar on the already outrageous Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series from 2020. Expect a heavy focus on aerodynamics, track-ready engineering, and outright lap time performance, with the Nürburgring Nordschleife clearly in its sights.Prototypes have already been undergoing intense testing at circuits like Bilster Berg, Algarve International Circuit, and Circuito Monteblanco. With development now moving to the Nürburgring, AMG is entering the phase where performance claims are truly put to the test.Alongside the road-going model, AMG is also developing a new GT3 race car to continue a lineage that began with the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3 and evolved through the Mercedes-AMG GT3. That connection matters, because the Black Series is built alongside it. A Performance Battle Worth Watching amg-track-sport-image-1 The Ford Mustang GTD has already thrown down a serious benchmark at the Nürburgring Nordschleife with a best lap of around 6:52, powered by an 800+ hp supercharged V8 and race-derived suspension. But, it didn’t hold the crown for long. The new Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 responded with a 1,064-hp twin-turbo V8 monster of its own and a quicker 6:50.7 lap, while the even more extreme ZR1X pushed that down to 6:49.2, making it the fastest American car around the Ring. With those numbers in mind, the upcoming Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series has a serious target on its back. The last Black Series already ran a 6:48 lap, so if AMG delivers on its promise of an even more extreme successor, it could realistically dip into the mid-6:40s—putting it right in the middle of this escalating performance war, and possibly back on top.We will still have to wait a while to see what comes from this. The new Mercedes-AMG GT3 is still in development through 2026, with a possible debut for racing around the 2027 season, and if everything stays on schedule, we could see the new Black Series in full form next year. UPDATE: The Mustang GTD Might Already Be Way Faster Than Anyone Expected Hagerty, YouTubeJust when it looked like the Corvette had the Nürburgring bragging rights locked down, the Mustang GTD might’ve pulled a fast one. New footage from the Stateside Supercars YouTube channel shows not one, but two GTD prototypes absolutely flying around the Nordschleife.Based on some rough timing, a black GTD (likely a Euro-spec car) ripped off laps of 6:42.82 and an even crazier 6:41.74. Meanwhile, a blue U.S.-spec car wasn’t exactly hanging around either, clocking a 6:45.71. None of these are official times, but they’re quick enough to make everyone else in this fight a little nervous.Every single one of those laps beats the Corvette ZR1 and even the ZR1X. If these numbers are even remotely legit, the GTD didn’t just clap back… it absolutely smoked the competition. We’re talking potential top-five production car territory at the Nürburgring. This means Ford clearly isn’t done yet. Whether it’s dialing in the setup, tweaking aero, or just letting the car off the leash a bit more, the GTD looks like it still has more in the tank. If you’re AMG, you’ve gotta be watching this thinking, “Alright… game on.”
