When Ford CEO Jim Farley said game on in response to Chevrolet beating the Mustang GTD's American Nürburgring record last year, we figured it was more than just words. Now, at least part of that challenge is realized with a very impressive new time for GTD around the Nordschleife loop. Just hours after Manthey Racing announced the 911 GT3 RS with its kit had set a new record that was seven seconds quicker than the standard GTD, Ford has now managed to shave over 11 seconds off the GTD's previous benchmark time. In the process, it's blown the Chevrolet Corvette ZR1X and 911 GT3 RS Manthey Kit away completely. Say hello to the new American king of the 'Ring.Ford didn't accomplish this with a normal GTD, however, so there's a bit of a caveat here. This is a new version called the GTD Competition. Details are scarce, but as of right now, it's still a pre-production car. That means the lap time set, while certainly impressive, falls into that category where, technically, the Corvette is as well. Let's take a closer look to see what all this means. Faster Than Mercedes Black Series And Porsche 911 GT2 RS Manthey, But... Ford This new GTD Competition clocked an official Nürburgring time of 6 minutes, 40.83 seconds. That's in a completely different universe from the GTD's previous time of 6:52.07. It also lives in another world from the Corvette ZR1X at 6:49.27, and it slips past the Porsche 911 GT2 RS with the Manthey Performance upgrades, too. That car turned a 6:43.30 lap, controversially taking the production car crown from the Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series since it's an "enhanced" version of the GT2. But, it's one that you can technically buy at dealerships. The only production car with a faster lap at the Green Hell is now the supremely expensive Mercedes-AMG One, which holds the production record at 6:29.09. But there's the rub for Ford fans – production car. At this time, the GTD Competition is a pre-production prototype, and there are actually five other cars in that category still faster around the Nordschleife. That also means the time isn't valid next to the AMG GT Black Series and 911 GT2 RS Manthey, so Ford can't claim the fastest front-engine record. Still, it's a seriously impressive time for anything rooted in street use. And the GTD Competition will be street-legal... when it eventually launches.“When we said, 'Game On,' we meant it. Mustang GTD was always meant to bridge the worlds between GT3 race cars and street-legal supercars, and the GTD Competition takes this to the next level to continue keeping Europe’s elite up at night.- Ford CEO Jim Farley What Is The New Mustang GTD Competition? CarBuzz/ValnetThat is a great question, but it's one that Ford isn't willing to answer with details just yet. In a short press release about the Nürburgring lap, we're told the GTD Competition has more than 815 horsepower, the figure you get with the normal GTD. It's still a supercharged 5.2-liter V8, but it gets "hardware updates and aggressive tuning" for extra oomph. There are aerodynamic changes as well – modifications to the ginormous rear wing, secondary front dive planes, and aero discs that are easily visible on the rear wheels.Speaking of wheels, there are new magnesium rollers shod with "new high-performance tires." The type and size are unknown, but a close look at the single static photo we received appears to show slicks on the back. That would be a big no-no for the record books. It could be an edited photo to hide the tread pattern, but whatever the case, Ford told CarBuzz in an email that the time was set on "tires that meet U.S. DOT requirements."When will this new Mustang GTD Competition arrive? That's unknown, but it could be "years" according to the above video showing the car in action. The fine print reads: "Actual vehicle may vary. Very limited, late availability in coming years."Getting a production-based front-engine car around the Nordschleife in 6:40 is a noteworthy feat, even if the car was secretly on race rubber. And of course, Ford recently announced another Nürburgring achievement with a special version of the GT. Now, Ford just needs to do it with a car people can actually, you know, buy from their local Ford dealer."The Mustang GTD Competition is more than a world-class supercar," said Farley. "It is the embodiment of our team using all of its experience to get every detail just right. They are as good as it gets, and the 6:40.8 time proves it to the world.”
