Porsche Reveals Its First 911-Based GT4 Race CarPorscheThe new Porsche 911 GT4 R race car has been revealed as the successor to the discontinued 718 Cayman GT4 RS Clubsport. That makes it the first 911-based GT4-spec racer, and it's powered by a 4.0-liter flat-six that makes up to 513 horsepower and 346 pound-feet of torque. The 911 GT4 R will be sold in the United States for $375,000, and it will start competing in the 2027 motorsports season.Porsche has been developing and building race cars specifically for the GT4 category since 2016, but they've all been based on the 718 Cayman until now. With Porsche's entry-level sports car out of production, the company is introducing a 911-based GT4-spec race for the very first time. Called the 911 GT4 R, it has been homologated to compete in the SRO GT4 America and IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge as well as factory-backed, one-make racing series.PorscheThe 992.2 911 Cup race car serves as the GT4 R's foundation, which provides some notable differences between the outgoing 718 Cayman RS Clubsport. Not only does the new 911 version feature wider front and rear track widths and enhanced motorsports tech, but it has a more powerful engine than the 718, too. The GT4 R is powered by a 4.0-liter flat-six that makes up to 513 horsepower and 346 pound-feet of torque. Of course, these outputs will fluctuate to meet the Balance of Performance (BoP) regulations. Still, every GT4-spec 911 is equipped with a sequential six-speed dog 'box that swaps cogs with the help of a four-disc racing clutch manipulated by paddle shifters.AdvertisementAdvertisement"The 911 embodies Porsche's motorsport DNA like no other car. Transferring this to a GT4 car opens up new possibilities in terms of performance and driving experience," said Matthias Scholz, director GT racing cars at Porsche Motorsport. "The new 911 GT4 R benefits from the detailed work already carried out during the development of the 911 Cup."While the GT4 R takes a lot from the 911 Cup, its chassis has some key changes due to the different class requirements. For instance, the GT4 race car has a five-lug bolt pattern versus the more sophisticated center-lock design, and its wheels are an inch narrower. Still, you'll get dampers with two adjustments and three selectable spring rates, so the suspension tune offers some flexibility.PorschePorsche says the 911 GT4 R shares structural parts with the 911 Cup car. Along with a rear wing that offers 11 manually adjustable positions, the GT4's aero bits, doors, and engine cover are all made from light but strong natural-fiber-reinforced plastic. Inside, the driver faces a 10.3-inch digital display that provides all the important information, and it's supplemented by a built-in data logger and GPS system that give real-time analysis during a race. And to make sure the car meets its BoP requirements, there are ballast adjustments.PorscheThe new Porsche 911 GT4 R will cost $375,000 when it goes on sale in the United States, and it's expected to start competing in the 2027 motorsports season.➡️ Skip the lot.
