The restomod scene continues to be booming. Apparently, a significant number of wealthy buyers are willing to pay six- or seven-figure sums to own an updated version of a classic car. Companies such as Singer Vehicle Design and Icon 4X4 have made popular businesses out of doing these builds.HWA isn't the best-known restomod builder, but it has impressive credentials. One of the company's founders is Hans-Werner Aufrecht, whose name is the “A” in AMG. His new business is building a modernized version of a classic Mercedes-Benz, specifically the 190E, with specific inspiration from the highly AMG-tuned version that raced in the German DTM series in the 1980s and early 1990s.And now, it's building a racing version. And it looks amazing. The HWA EVO R Is Track Ready HWASince first showing the HWA EVO project in 2023, the company has chronicled the vehicle's development. It's now planning on racing them at the 2026 24 Hours of the Nürburgring. The next step is to build a limited run of 15 examples of the EVO R track car, which is closely based on the endurance competition version. The EVO R track car is based on the HWA EVO.R race car. The exterior design evokes the classic DTM-spec Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.5-16 Evo II, combining chiseled bodywork with prominent fender flares and a large rear wing. All the body panels are carbon fiber. Compared to the regular HWA EVO, this version has a different hood, NACA air intakes, polycarbonate windows, and removable rear doors. The Ronal six-spoke lightweight racing wheels offer a classic, understated appearance.Underneath the skin, the EVO R has a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 making 552 horsepower and 494 pound-feet of torque. The powerplant sits behind the front axle, and a six-way sequential gearbox sends power to the rear wheels through a transaxle. Six-way adjustable suspension components using KW and H&R parts let the driver tweak the setup for track conditions. AP Racing competition brakes bring the car to a stop. Experience Through Competition HWAThe EVO R includes several track-focused modifications. The driver sits in a full-carbon racing seat with a six-point harness, and there's a movable pedal box for getting the right position behind the wheel. An FIA-homologated roll cage, fire extinguisher system, and fuel cell keep occupants safe if something goes wrong. The EVO R is a track-only vehicle, but air conditioning and a drinks system are options for keeping cool while doing laps. A passenger seat is also available if the owner wants to take someone along for the ride. For serious work around the circuit, customers can add an integrated airjack and a 24-hour lighting package for racing at night. The folks who buy an EVO R also get racing support from HWA, including access to the company's technicians and a parts service.HWA has entered three EVO.R race cars into the 24 Hours of the Nürburgring, running on May 16 and 17. They are running in the SP-X class, with a driver lineup that includes a mix of professionals and amateurs.HWAHWA hasn't begun customer deliveries of the Evo yet, but the vehicle has been deep in hot- and cold-weather development. The road-going version also uses a twin-turbo 3.0-liter V6, but it makes around 444 horsepower, with an option for 493 horsepower. It also uses a manual gearbox. Each of them costs around $900,000, depending on the customer's level of customization. HWA has also raised the possibility of a second model that would have a V8 engine.HWA Evo R Mercedes-Benz 190E Restomod
