Kia gave the 2027 Niro a sharper face, more tech, and one very telling change for America: the small crossover is now hybrid-only.That means the Niro EV is gone from the U.S. lineup, at least for the 2027 model year. So is the plug-in hybrid version, which had already faded from the American menu. What remains is a regular hybrid crossover powered by a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine, an electric motor, and a six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. Total output stays at 139 horsepower, which means the Niro still will not scare anyone at a drag strip unless the other car is parked.2027 NiroView the 2 images of this gallery on the original articleAdvertisementAdvertisementStill, the move says something interesting about the U.S. market. Kia is not walking away from electrification. It is simply turning the Niro into the practical hybrid option while letting its dedicated EV family do the battery-electric heavy lifting. In other words, Niro no longer has to be everything to everyone. That job apparently belongs to BMW, which has treated the BMW X5 lineup like a powertrain buffet, with gasoline, diesel, plug-in hybrid, and even hydrogen versions in different corners of the world. German indecision has rarely looked so thoroughly engineered.Kia's own strategy looks cleaner, though maybe a little awkward. The Niro started life as a fuel-sipping alternative for people who wanted crossover usefulness without crossover thirst. Then it became a hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and EV nameplate. Now, for 2027, Kia is bringing it back to one core idea: efficient, simple, everyday hybrid transportation. That sounds oddly sensible in a market where many buyers still like the idea of EVs more than the daily homework that can come with owning one. A regular hybrid does not need a home charger, a charging app, a route-planning ritual, or a personality built around kilowatt-hours. You just put gas in it and let the electric motor help where it can. It is electrification without the group project. The refreshed Niro also gets a cleaner look. Kia added redesigned front and rear fascias, new Star Map lighting signatures, revised bumper treatments, and new exterior colors called Ivory Silver and Sunset Beige. Inside, the crossover now has a standard 12.3-inch infotainment screen, an available 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and available over-the-air updates through Kia's Connected Car Navigation Cockpit.2027 NiroView the 2 images of this gallery on the original articleAdvertisementAdvertisementThere is more tech, too. Depending on trim, the Niro can offer streaming services, themed display options, Kia's AI Assistant, Highway Drive Assist 2, a 360-degree Surround View Monitor, and Blind-Spot View Monitor. That gives the little hybrid a more modern cabin without pretending it has suddenly become a luxury spaceship. The interesting comparison may not be another EV, but something like the Subaru Forester. Both appeal to people who want real-world usefulness more than showroom theater. The Subaru leans outdoorsy and rugged; the Kia leans efficient and tech-forward. Neither one needs to explain itself with a 45-minute charging stop.Pricing for the 2027 Niro will be announced closer to launch, with sales expected to begin this summer. For now, Kia's message is clear enough: the Niro EV is out, the hybrid survives, and the most old-fashioned form of electrification suddenly looks pretty current. This story was originally published by Men's Journal on Jul 2, 2026, where it first appeared in the News section.
