According to a report from the usually well-informed Chinese portal 36kr, Sunwoda has now been added to this list, having recently ranked seventh in China’s battery market. The batteries are reportedly sourced from Sunwoda’s plant in Yiwu, Zhejiang Province, and will be delivered to Tesla’s Gigafactory in Shanghai. Unlike its partnership with CATL, Tesla’s primary supplier for Giga Shanghai, Sunwoda is expected to supply only the battery cells rather than complete battery modules. Tesla will instead assemble the prismatic cells into battery modules and packs itself. The battery cells supplied by Sunwoda to Tesla are said to be third-generation LFP cells, capable of a 3C charging rate. For now, these Sunwoda battery cells are apparently being used only in vehicles destined for export. It remains unclear when they will also be used in Tesla vehicles for the Chinese market.Although Sunwoda is currently the seventh-largest battery manufacturer in China, its sales volume remains far behind that of market leader CATL. Additionally, the company has recently faced quality issues, with recalls affecting the Volvo EX30 and the Zeekr 001 traced back to Sunwoda batteries. The company is also facing a lawsuit from Geely, the owner of Volvo and Zeekr. On the other hand, Sunwoda entered into a promising joint venture with Li Auto last August.36kr.com (Chinese), cnevpost.com
