Sure, the WRX and BRZ are great, but if you ask car nuts what Subaru did best, many would tell you it's utes. It's been 20 years since Subaru built one, but the enthusiast segment has done everything to keep them alive and well. Travis Pastrana tearing up the outback with a worked-over Brat is a prime example of it. Naturally, that crowd will be fired up to learn that Subaru is at least considering bringing one back into the fold. Subaru Australia Hints At Ute Revival Bring a Trailer Now, before I oversell the possibility of Subaru utes making a massive comeback, I need to be perfectly clear and say, it sounds like it’s simply something that has been discussed internally. CarSales.com had a private interview with Subaru Australia’s general manager, Scott Lawrence. In it, they asked him if there were plans to revive the beloved segment.Lawrence said, “There have been discussions of a ute…ute is a conversation, and I can’t share much now...Our focus has been really owning the territory that we already have: Forester, Forester Hybrid, symmetrical all-wheel drive, new Outback with Wilderness."By that response, it really does seem as though reviving a ute is an idea that’s tossed around from time to time, with little hope for it happening any time soon. Though after being pressed, Lawrence shared that he feels there is “space for a monocoque style ute,” that could compete with the Ford Maverick and Hyundai Santa Cruz in Australia. He added that there is a discussion being had with Subaru corporate, but that's about all. Another Fight For Ford Bring a Trailer Yes. The Maverick is a serious competitor on a global scale, reminding automakers that people love compact trucks. That doesn’t necessarily mean that if Subaru does decide to take Ford on, it'll be a direct competitor to the Maverick. Especially since Toyota is about to do just that, and Subura won't want to interfere. So, if a ute does come, it may be a sort of Baja revival, and, if so, it may not be uncontested.Back in August of 2025, Ford renewed the trademark on the Ranchero name. Since then, we haven’t heard anything about why Ford decided to do so, with many speculating it’ll be used for a new model. If that’s the case, a Subaru Baja resurrection may be warranted to meet the Blue Oval in battle. While there’s a good chance that nothing will come from any of this, many gearheads, myself included, are cheering for a ute renaissance.
