Source: Signature AutosportsSource: Signature AutosportsUsually when the term "reimagined" is thrown around in the automotive community, it almost automatically conjures visions of the Singer-built Porsches. Yet Signature Autosports is throwing their hat in the psuedo-restomod ring, coming to the party with a 300 SL-inspired coupe that blends Gullwing style with more modern performance. As it turns out, though, the car isn't really a Mercedes underneath, but rather a 2004 Chrysler Crossfire.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementCar nerds will note that the Crossfire is actually a Mercedes R170 SLK chassis, so sure, this car is somewhat a Merc. But what it definitely is will undoubtedly turn heads; the work Signature Autosports went to so as to create a coachbuilt 300 SL-inspired coupe really is something different.Signature Autosports says the car has classic inspiration with modern execution, and it isn't a replica. This Crossfire-SL mashup isn't a replica, but rather a "modern interpretation of one of the most celebrated silhouettes in automotive history." Draped in Bentley Sequin Blue Metallic paint, the unmistakable Gullwing upward-opening doors are the main focus of the show, but the modernized headlights are a dead giveaway that this is no original beast.AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementUnder the skin is the chassis of a 2004 Chrysler Crossfire (VIN 1C3AN69L34X007225, for those wondering). A coachbuilt body covers it, and power comes from a 3.2L M112 E32 SOHC 18-valve V6 engine paired with a 5-speed 5G-Tronic automatic transmission. Yes, we wish it had a more appropriate engine and gearbox, but Signature Autosports is really going for retro-meets-modern here.Inside the cabin is a tan-forward design with diamond-stitched upholstery. Golden Brown Merino leather steals the show, another clue that this isn't an original Gullwing. The gauges are particularly cool touches, but there's something odd about the low-back seats contrasted against the Crossfire's upright, retro-futuristic dashboard and climate/radio controls. The price for all of this is a hefty $299,950. That's a fair chunk of change, but relatively nothing compared to the "other" reimagined cars out there.
