Two days ago, Ford announced that it was going to give Super Duty buyers more ways to get into the Tremor grade and its mild off-road extras. We already don't care, because Shelby American has just done what Shelby does best. The tuning company best known for Mustangs (and a few turbocharged front-wheel-drive Dodges in the 1980s) just smashed the factory offerings out of the park with a brand-new Ford F-250-based monster called the Shelby Super Baja. Think of it like a Raptor that can tow a house, with more of just about everything than will ever come out of Dearborn. But you'll pay for it. Whoa, boy will you pay for it. More on that later. Super Duty Gets Super Makeover Shelby American Shelby starts with a Lariat trim F-250 Super Crew with the 6.7-liter diesel, but we're willing to bet you can start with almost any F-250 as a base. That's because there isn't much left that's stock once Shelby's team gets through with the truck. We'll start with the suspension. Shelby lifts the Super Baja using its own parts. Then it fits massive 2.5-inch King Race Series shocks front and rear. They're more than up to dune-jumping abuse, and they have gigantic external reservoirs to help keep the fluid cool on punishing drives.Shelby American Shelby also fits King steering stabilizers to help with the massive tires when you're off-roading. The company's own radius arms help boost durability and, Shelby says, increase suspension articulation. The 20-inch Shelby wheels wear BF Goodrich tires. The Super Baja gets 37-inch tall tires all around, and customers can pick between BFG's KM3 mud tires or KO3 all-terrains, based on where they're planning to drive. Either way, you get two full-sized spares mounted in the truck bed in case of remote tire trouble.Shelby hasn't stopped with the suspension. The trucks get new bumpers at both ends, built by Addictive Desert Designs to improve clearance, withstand more abuse, and hold oh-so-many LED lights. Those LED lights are DOT compliant, the company says, though that will likely depend on when and how you use the 40-inch front bar and the dual 10-inch rears. But Where's The Beef? Shelby American There is a Shelby sport bar in the bed, with even more LED lights. Plus, Shelby goes through the little details with things like painted fender flares and a spray-in bedliner. There are Shelby Le Mans stripes on the roof and sides, and new seat covers on the inside. And of course, you'll find Shelby branding all over the place, including a Shelby Registry plaque. The only thing Shelby hasn't touched is the one place we would expect it to spend the most time: under the hood. The Super Baja gets the High Output version of Ford's 6.7-liter Power Stroke V8 diesel, but it makes the same 500 horsepower and 1,200 pound-feet of torque as it did when it left the Ford factory. This is a company known for 800-horse Mustangs and founded by a guy who crammed gigantic V8s into tiny British sports cars. On the other hand, it's hard to make a case for 1,200 pound-feet of torque not being enough, even on something like this. About That Price Shelby AmericanIf you want the biggest Shelby truck of them all, be prepared to pay supercar money for one. Prices start from $159,795, not including any options. That might be a tough sell considering the engine is factory stock, but you do get all the suspension upgrades covered under warranty. The company plans to build 250 copies of the truck this year, and says that it will come with Ford's factory powertrain warranty and 3 years, 36,000 miles from Shelby. Shelby even says it can still tow up to 22,000 pounds, though we wouldn't recommend doing that while jumping over dunes in the desert. That is, if any of these pricey pickups ever sees a trail, never mind dunes. Production of the Shelby Super Baja started this month.
