Volkswagen is getting ready to reveal the new ID. Polo and ID. Polo GTI hatchbacks, but the world decided to reveal them first. New images have just leaked that show the new models in the metal. They appear to be on stage, ready for the official reveal, suggesting it will happen very soon. Possibly even sooner, now that the cat is out of the bag. This Could Be The Most Important VW In Years The photographs first showed up on Instagram before being taken down. One takedown isn't going to stop the internet, though, so the pictures have now appeared on multiple sites, including Reddit. Volkswagen has shown camouflaged teasers of the Polo and GTI before, but this is the first time we've seen them bare. And they look exactly what you expect a new Volkswagen hatchback to look like.Yes, it looks like a near-copy of the gas-powered Polo, though that's not a bad idea, given sales from other brands that have made their EVs look "normal." It isn't identical, though, and the devil is in the details. Details like new headlights and a new front-end treatment that carries a family resemblance to the ID.4 and other VW EVs. The hood is also strange, because on the electric it doesn't need to come to the very edge of the grille like we're used to.Where the gas Polo has a sharp crease running through the door handles and out the rear, the ID. Polo's is much smoother. It also kicks up to meet the beltline at the end of the rear door. There are wider flat surfaces around the wheels, and VW has smoothed out the lower door crease, too. VW Is Looking To Recapture The Magic Of GTI Volkswagen The ID. Polo GTI then adds GTI details. A red stripe under the headlights and across the LED grille, to start, with a red GTI text badge on the edge of the grille. It also has red accents and a hexagonal mesh in the lower grille, and tall LED marker lights in the corners. Black mirrors and new wheels help complete the look.We are surprised by one detail, though, and that's the lower section of the bumper and the side sills. They're bare gray plastic, and it's a look you'd expect on a lifted "rugged" model, not a GTI. We'll have to wait to ask about that later.Volkswagen This will be the first electric GTI model, and Volkswagen has already given us a few tasty morsels from the spec sheet. The model will get a single motor in the front that delivers 223 horsepower. It will also come with a limited-slip front differential to make sure that the electric torque isn't just spinning the inside tire every time you brush the pedal.Volkswagen also said that it will try to re-create some of the magic of the original Golf GTI with this EV. That includes the suspension and steering tuning, and even the throttle response. The new GTI will use the Volkswagen MEB+ platform, and it will have a range of around 275 miles from a 52-kilowatt-hour battery. The non-GTI ID. Polo will start with a 37 kWh pack delivering more like 200 miles but offering a lower starting price.Source: Reddit
