The second edition of the Oberoi Concours d’Elegance—just concluded at the Oberoi Udaivilas resort in Udaipur in northwest India—was one of only a handful of concours ever held on the subcontinent and helped reaffirm India’s status as an emerging force in the classic-car world. This one, the second ever after its debut in 2024, was held over three days, enlisting global collectors, historians, and designers. It was also the inaugural of the Oberoi Tour d’Elegance, run along the shores of Fateh Sagar Lake, one of the many such bodies of water in what you could call India’s Lake District.“The Oberoi Concours d’Elegance reflects our enduring commitment to preserving heritage and celebrating India’s unique motoring history,” said Arjun Oberoi, executive chairman of the the Oberoi Group, the hotel company that hosted it. This year’s jury was led by chief judge Sandra Button, chair of the Pebble Beach Concours. The judges and supporters of the event included no less a list of luminaries than Sir Jackie Stewart, Sir Michael Kadoorie, Giacomo Agostini, Jean Todt, and Derek and Justin Bell. “The Oberoi Concours d’Elegance continues to strengthen its presence on the global concours landscape,” said Button. “The quality of the automobiles and the respect for authenticity make it a meaningful gathering for collectors and historians alike.”This year’s curated classes included: Indian Heritage Motor Racing, Indian Coachbuilt, Cars of the Maharajahs, and Rolls-Royce Pre-War Classics. A special Phantom retrospective traced a century of Rolls-Royce excellence, underscoring India’s enduring association with the marque. BMW returned as a sponsor and brought several of its cars.Though the country’s 26th amendment in 1971 ended their powers and privileges, many members of India’s erstwhile royal families continue to enjoy wealth and social status, and several of those came out to enjoy the concours, including H.H. Maharaja Gaj Singhji of Jodhpur, H.H. Maharaja Himanshu Kumarsinhji of Gondal, Yuvraj Mahanaaryaman Scindia, H.H. Maharaja Manujendra Shah of Tehri Garhwal, and H.H. Maharaja Harshvardhan Singh of Dungarpur, reflecting the deep historic patronage of motoring culture in India. There’s a lot going on in this distant (from us) place. Looking forward to visiting the next concours.1939 Bentley G25Best of Show Automobiles WinnerThe winning 1939 Bentley 4¼ Litre Drophead Coupe, with body by H J Mulliner.1939 Bentley G25 Best of Show Automobiles WinnerMr. Arjun Oberoi, executive chairman of the Oberoi Group, Sandra Button, and Mr. Dhanraj Gidwaney.1939 Bentley G25 Best of Show Automobiles WinnerMr. Arjun Oberoi, executive chairman of the Oberoi Group, Simon Kidston and Mr. Dhanraj Gidwaney.1939 Bentley G25Best of Show Automobiles Winner1935 Rolls-Royce Phantom II Drophead Coupe by WindoversOwned by H.R.H.
