Anyone who lives and drives in a snowy part of the world knows two things about tires. Nothing beats a good studded winter tire for staying safe on icy, snowpacked roads. And when the roads clear, nothing is worse than a good studded winter tire. The same little steel studs that grip ice don't really grip pavement that well, never mind the damage they do to the surface. It's a Catch-22 that winter drivers have faced for years. Now, Nokian may have a solution, or at least a partial one. The brand recently announced a new tire with studs that only extend out when you need them. If they work as advertised, this could be a game-changer for drivers in cold climates. But it may not solve all problems associated with studded tires. "On Demand Studs" NokianThe tire in question is the latest in Nokian's legendary Hakkapeliitta winter series. The Hakkapeliita 01 uses something Nokian calls Double Action Stud Technology. In short, studs embedded within the tire can expand outward when it's cold. Once things warm above freezing, the studs tuck themselves back into the tire, leaving just the tread to contact the surface. It works not with some space-age sensing technology, nor is it something the driver can control. Nokian has developed a new rubber compound embedded below the tread. It's called the adaptive base compound, and it's particularly sensitive to temperature. Below freezing, the compound is extremely stiff, forcing the studs out of the tread. Above freezing, the compound softens. This lets the studs nestle back up into the tread as it rolls over the surface.According to Nokian, this tire improves ice grip by 10%, while reducing road wear by as much as 30%. Wet grip increased by 5%, and road noise is also reduced slightly.“With the new Nokian Tyres Hakkapeliitta 01, we set out to rethink what a studded winter tire can be. We didn’t want to compromise between superior ice grip and low road wear, which is a common trade-off in winter tire development."-Mikko Liukkula, Nokian Tyres development manager Responds To Temperature, But Not Surface Conditions NokianThe passive tech sounds great for drivers encountering differences in temperature, but there's a rather obvious caveat when it comes to surfaces. If you're driving on a cleared road in sub-freezing temperatures, the studs will still be hammering the pavement. In theory, a cleared road could be warmed by the sun, possibly enough to soften the base compound. But on a cold night, the tire would still be rolling with full studs. That means you still get all the problems associated with normal studded tires. It also means locations where studded tires are banned likely wouldn't offer exceptions for the Hakkapeliitta 01. So while the design is certainly interesting, its real-world application might be limited.Several tire companies like Nokian offer studless ice tires that rely on a combination of tread design and rubber compounds to grip ice, and they can be slightly more effective in that role than a standard winter tire. They still don't compare to actual studs, so Nokian's new tire could be a better, safer choice for drivers where such tires are allowed. The Nokian Hakkapeliitta 01 will go on sale in Nordic countries as well as North America in the fall of 2026.
