Nissan Frontier Pro PHEVThe Nissan Navara Pro goes to Mexico, Australia, and practically everywhere else but the U.S.The Nissan Navara Pro/Frontier Pro is a PHEV mid-sized pickup truck made in China. It's heading to markets like Mexico and Australia. It shows that China's export boom isn't all about Chinese brands.Meet the Nissan Frontier Pro. On Thursday, the automaker said it's bringing this midsize plug-in hybrid pickup to global markets like Mexico and Australia. But it's more than just another electrified vehicle Americans can't have. Developed and made in China, the truck shows that the country's massive export push isn't just coming from homegrown brands like BYD and Geely.Designed for China by Zhengzhou Nissan, the automaker's joint venture with China's Dongfeng, the Frontier Pro comes with a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine and an electric motor mounted in the transmission that produces 402 horsepower. A 33-kilowatt-hour battery feeds that electric motor. Those are the specs for the Chinese market, where the Frontier Pro is already sold. Nissan hasn't shared details for markets outside of China yet.Nissan said the truck will launch in Mexico this month, followed by other Latin American markets later this year. In 2027, it'll arrive in Australia, New Zealand, the Philippines, and the Middle East as the Navara Pro, the company said.Nissan Frontier Pro PHEVIt's part of a trend of non-Chinese automakers exporting their made-in-China cars abroad. In Mexico, much of Chevrolet's lineup is actually rebranded Chinese cars. For example, the Chevrolet Groove is a rebadged Wuling Xingchi, a car made by GM's joint venture with SAIC and Wuling. Same with the Chevrolet Captiva EV, which is a rebranded Wuling Starlight S. Mazda's Changan-made EZ-60 EV is making inroads in Europe and Asia, and so is Toyota's GAC-made bZ3 crossover.Nissan itself also announced its intention to bring the N7 EV sedan to markets outside of China. On Thursday, it said the Frontier Pro's launch abroad highlighted "China's growing role as an innovation and export hub" for the company. Meanwhile, Volkswagen Group CEO Oliver Blume has said the company could start importing some China-built cars to Europe. If you're outside of the U.S., it isn't uncommon to find a new car from a familiar brand that may have ties back to China. What's also notable is that China is building vehicle types that are specifically palatable outside of the country. Sure, the Frontier Pro (also called the Navara Pro) is sold in China, but pickup trucks aren't big sellers there because of laws that make it hard to drive one daily in any Chinese city. However, Chinese brands seem willing to meet other markets where they are. The Navara Pro PHEV is the latest in the line of PHEV pickup truck models introduced to other markets, following the Chery Stockman and BYD Shark.Nissan Frontier Pro PHEVThere's pretty much no chance this Nissan PHEV truck will ever make it to the U.S., for several reasons. This truck is subject to extremely high import tariffs on Chinese vehicles and non-US-made trucks. Since it's at least partially designed by Nissan's Chinese partner, it likely would be subject to the ban on Chinese connected cars, too. That doesn't mean we won't get some sort of electrified Nissan truck here in the U.S., though. Recently, Nissan said it wants hybrids to become the dominant powertrain for its lineup in North America by 2030, and the new Rogue Hybrid kicks that off. Maybe that means an electrified Nissan pickup is in the works too.Nissan's EV Sedan, Frontier PHEV Make Me Wish For A Different RealityNissan Wants Hybrids To Be Its Primary Powertrain By 2030Nissan's Newest EV Isn't Actually A NissanMitsubishi's Clone Of The Nissan Leaf Isn't All That Cheap
