Niels van Roij Revives a Lost Chinetti Ferrari with the One-Off Daytona Shooting Brake HommageA one-off tribute to one of the strangest and most celebrated Ferrari commissions of the 1970s is heading to auction this year. Listed by Broad Arrow Auctions for the Zoute Concours sale, the Daytona Shooting Brake Hommage is a single-commission creation from Dutch coachbuilder Niels van Roij Design, built to reimagine a one-off 365 GTB/4 wagon that Chinetti-Garthwaite Motors produced for a Pennsylvania client more than fifty years ago.The story behind the original car is pure Ferrari-world eccentricity. In the early 1970s, Pennsylvania collector Bob Gittleman asked Chinetti-Garthwaite Motors for something no other Daytona owner had, and Luigi "Coco" Chinetti Jr. paired with designer Gene Garfinkle to answer the brief. Using Daytona chassis 15275 as the basis, Panther Westwinds of Surrey stripped the coupe to its windscreen, A-pillars, and doors, then fitted aluminum coachwork with a pair of glass tailgate wings and a centrally mounted instrument cluster in place of the standard dashboard. The finished shooting brake reportedly cost its owner as much as four new Daytonas combined.Rather than clone that car, Niels van Roij Design set out to answer the same question its client posed decades later: what would a modern ode to that Chinetti wagon look like? The commission took a 2009 Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano, left its naturally aspirated V12 untouched, and rebuilt almost everything around it. Roughly 15,000 hours went into digital surfacing, CAD engineering, and hand fabrication, with every exterior panel besides the doors newly formed in aluminum. The roofline rises gently over the driver before sweeping into a sharply raked Kamm tail, finished without a rear bumper or visible shutlines to interrupt the surface.AdvertisementAdvertisementThe Chinetti car's signature party trick returns in electrified form. Butterfly side windows, hinged on precision-milled aluminum with drilled detailing, swing upward to open the luggage bay while the fixed rear glass stays put, echoing the 1972 original's glass wings. Up front, bespoke lamp units realized in 3D-printed carbon composite reinterpret the amber lighting graphic that once separated the Daytona wagon from its coupe siblings, running above hand-formed vertical grille vanes. At the back, lighting sits behind tempered glass in a trapezoidal tail section, with four exhaust outlets set into a carbon fiber diffuser below.Inside, cognac leather covers the seats, dashboard, door panels, headliner, and luggage bay over hand-formed aluminum structures, with carbon fiber standing in for the walnut trim of the 1972 car. The instrument binnacle is mounted centrally once again, and six CNC-machined aluminum runners sit recessed into the carbon parcel shelf behind the seats, the outer pair engraved with the car's name. Van Roij himself described the project as "a unique sense of occasion in creating something that will never be repeated," a fitting summary for a design brief built entirely around a single client's memory of a single car.Broad Arrow carries an estimate of €450,000 to €650,000 for the Hommage at Zoute, a figure that makes more sense once the underlying market is considered. Hagerty Valuation Tools currently prices a #3-condition 1972 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona coupe at roughly $525,000, with the broader Daytona coupe and Spyder market showing 24 vehicles sold over the past year for a combined $20.3 million and an average price near $847,000. The 599 GTB Fiorano donor car tells a very different story: Hagerty pegs a #3-condition 2009 example at around $187,000, with values up over 11 percent in the past year as the model's Enzo-derived V12 and analog-friendly character draw renewed interest. A coachbuilt one-off riding on that donor, with a direct link to a documented piece of Ferrari coachbuilding history, sits in a category Hagerty's data can't price directly, since no comparable sale exists.Coachbuilt specials and record-setting Ferraris have kept the wider auction world busy this year. Broad Arrow's own recent private sale of a paper-trail F40 shows the appetite for well-documented exotics, while RM Sotheby's saw a Ferrari Luce chassis blow past estimate at Monterey.
