Mitsubishi's US Comeback Plan Includes a PickupSTAN HONDA - Getty ImagesMitsubishi is prepping for a major expansion of its US vehicle lineup, including a return to the pickup market through a partnership with Nissan. The move is all part of Mitsubishi's attempt to reverse its withered presence in North America. The updated plans are all part of what Mitsubishi is calling its Momentum 2030 strategy, which calls for rolling out new products, entering more vehicle segments, opening more dealers, and offering a broader mix of electrified models. To start, Mitsubishi says its US lineup will expand to six in 2027 from four available today. The first major addition will be the all-electric Eclipse Sportback, scheduled to arrive this fall, followed during the first quarter of 2027 by a new off-road-oriented version of the Outlander.AdvertisementAdvertisementFollowing that, Mitsubishi will launch a pickup truck, leaning on it partnership with Nissan for the platform. Mitsubishi hasn't provided specifications or timing for the truck, or even what class we're looking at, but in either case it could make for an easy and cost-effective way for Mitsu to enter one of America's most important vehicle categories.A Mitsubishi Raider (top) from 2005, and a Montero (above) from 2007.MANAN VATSYAYANA - Getty ImagesWhy Mitsubishi would not lean on its own international pickup truck experience is also a question, as it has a long history of selling its Triton pickup globally. The last time the automaker sold a pickup stateside was the 2009 model year, when it offered a version of the Dodge Dakota.Mitsubishi is also venturing more seriously into the adventure and off-road market. In addition to the rugged Outlander, Mitsubishi recently confirmed the return of the Pajero, known historically in the US as the Montero. The company says no decision has been made about bringing the revived model to America, although a return has been under consideration."When we launched Momentum 2030, many questioned whether such an ambitious vision could be achieved," Mitsubishi Motors North America CEO Mark Chaffin said. "Today, that vision is taking shape."AdvertisementAdvertisementBy 2027, Mitsubishi expects its lineup to consist of the Outlander Sport, Eclipse Cross, Eclipse Sportback EV, Outlander, Outlander Plug-in Hybrid, and the yet-to-be-named rugged Outlander. The bigger test will be how positively the US buying public responds to the newer products, including that pickup and potentially a revived Montero. It'll be interesting to watch.
