There is one variant missing from the CLE lineup: the CLE 63. With the Mercedes-AMG CLE 53 offering just 443 horsepower, that’s certainly not the best AMG can do. That’s why an even hotter coupe is coming—but it won’t be a proper CLE 63, it will be something even more special. The "exceptionally extreme Mercedes‑AMG" will still bear a resemblance to the current CLE, the automaker said earlier this year when it teased the coupe. It looks like what you expect for a proper AMG CLE 63, with the Panamericana grille, an aggressive lower grille opening, and quad exhaust tips. The big wing on the back is the giveaway that this is something more, but how much more is the question. The new AMG is expected to pack a roaring V8 delivering around 650 hp, but we will have to wait for all the details. Until then, we peel back the camouflage to provide a peek at the new coupe. This is everything we know about Mercedes’ new "extreme" AMG. What Will Mercedes Call It? When Mercedes teased its new, "extreme" AMG earlier this year, it avoided calling it the CLE 63. The only thing the automaker said about the car was that it would be "based on the popular CLE." Mercedes made no mention of the name, going as far as captioning the car in the press photos as an "Uncompromising AMG." The automaker did reveal that the car would be the second Mythos series model after the AMG PureSpeed, which Mercedes had based on the SL, so the car will likely have a truly unique name. Mythos is Mercedes’ ultra-luxury low-volume sub-brand that launched in 2022. The automaker limited PureSpeed production to just 250 examples. What Will It Look Like? Mercedes-AMG CLE 63 Rendering By Motor1 Tell us what you think! View Comments The teaser images Mercedes released earlier this year provide an excellent look at the car’s styling, which includes prominent AMG features like the grille and exhaust, but the automaker still covered the car in camouflage. Our rendering highlights the coupe’s finer styling details, such as the dive planes on the front bumper and the aggressive side skirts. There are vents on the front fenders and on the bumper. At the back, between the quad exhaust, there is a small diffuser, and it is impossible to miss the large wing, which looks adjustable in the teaser photos. Photos by: Theophilus Chin | Motor1 The official photos also show that the car has a roll cage or some form of additional bracing where the rear seats are located. It’s unclear if that was extra safety equipment for the cold-weather testing the car was undergoing, or a hint at the car’s performance-oriented purpose. Inside, we expect the car to retain the CLE interior, including the large infotainment display, but the cabin should feature several unique AMG and Mythos touches. We expect it to be highly customizable due to its limited production run and heightened exclusivity. What Will Power It? Mercedes has made no official mention of what will power the hotter CLE, but we doubt it will be anything less than the twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 engine. The automaker allegedly planned to borrow the four-cylinder plug-in hybrid setup from the C63, but following backlash to that model’s downsized engine, which made 671 hp, Mercedes changed its mind. Rumors suggest the twin-turbo V8 could make as much as 646 hp—203 hp more than the CLE 53, and that’s all expected from the engine. It is unclear if the car will feature a mild-hybrid setup that might add more, but we don’t expect it to come with a plug. The engine will likely pair with AMG’s nine-speed Speedshift automatic transmission, with the 4Matic+ all-wheel-drive system standard. How Much Will It Cost? While the 2026 CLE 53 costs $77,650, we expect this CLE-based AMG to start well over $100,000. With a limited run of just 30 cars, the car could cost twice as much as the 53, maybe even more. We would not be shocked if it costs over $150,000, or even $200,000. When Will It Debut? Mercedes has not said when it will unveil the new AMG, but we expect it will be soon. The teaser images the automaker shared in January showed what appeared to be a production-ready coupe. If we look at the PureSpeed, Mercedes unveiled it in May 2024 ahead of summer shows like Goodwood and Pebble Beach. The automaker could follow a similar schedule with the new AMG, so it can parade the car in front of potential clients—if it’s not already sold out. We want your opinion!
