Get ready for a new generation of the Mercedes-Benz AMG GT Black Series, as the AMG skunkworks finally confirmed this week the return of its iconic badge together with the unveiling of a camouflaged prototype – and one quick glance at the prototype is enough to realize that we're in for an unprecedented level of performance. That’s because the new GT Black Series will essentially be a road-going version of AMG’s new GT3 customer race car, whose development is running alongside it. This marks a change in tack, as previous Black Series models have tended to arrive towards the end of a car’s run, serving as a final sendoff of sorts. The latest GT, however, has only been on sale since the 2024 model year. Aerodynamics Dialed To The Max Mercedes-BenzAs the teaser photos and video reveal, the aerodynamics package of the new GT Black Series appears to be almost exactly the same as the one on the race car. AMG’s engineers haven’t dialed things down one bit for the road-going version, with both models looking to share a common extended front lip spoiler and a huge rear wing supported by swan-neck struts – the design chosen to minimize disruptions of airflow over the lower surface of the wing, which is the area most vital to maximizing downforce. Some differences will naturally be present. The race car, shown with red stripes, which AMG said is the new hero color for its customer racing program, features a unique side exhaust, for example. The new GT Black Series, shown in its own yellow-green hero color, also features a taller ride height, a compromise necessary to navigate public roads. Both cars appear to feature lightweight polycarbonate for the side windows, though it isn’t clear whether this will make it to production for the new GT Black Series.Prototypes have been testing in public view since last fall, and AMG said the test cars have recently taken to the Nürburgring, a race track where the previous-generation AMG GT Black Series set a lap record for production cars upon its launch in 2020 by running a 6:43.62. That record has since been beaten by the AMG One hypercar, which ran a 6:29 in 2022, but the Black Series remains the fastest front-engine, rear-wheel drive car to lap the Green Hell.Interestingly, AMG has previously boasted that its latest GT sports car will be capable of breaking records, so a new attempt on the ’Ring record – perhaps for rear-wheel drive cars this time (the One has all-wheel drive) – is possible. The RWD record currently belongs to the Porsche 911 GT2 RS Manthey performance kit (6:38.8), which is nearly five seconds quicker than the Black Series. A New V8 Could Be Under The Hood Mercedes-BenzAMG hasn’t spilled the full details yet, but we do know the new GT Black Series will run a V8. Odds are it’ll be a fresh take on the M178 twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 already powering the GT, possibly branded the M178 Evo, following the naming convention used for the updated M177 V8 that debuted in the refreshed 2027 Mercedes-Benz S‑Class.Expect a flat-plane crankshaft, as seen in both the M177 Evo and the previous GT Black Series, bringing sharper response and a higher-revving, race-car-like character. The last Black Series pushed 720 horsepower and 390 pound-feet of torque, and this one should top that.Timing points to a debut later this year, lining up with AMG’s new GT3 race car, which is slated for delivery to customer teams around the end of 2026. That will give customer teams just enough runway to prep for the 2027 racing season. It also points to the new GT Black Series arriving in showrooms as a 2027 model, ready to rewrite the rules on track and road alike.Mercedes-Benz
