Mercedes-AMG is getting ready to launch its first home-grown electric vehicle, which will take the form of the second-generation GT 4-Door Coupe. The current, fabulously internal-combustion model will give way to a full EV sometime this year, and the automaker began what will assuredly be an agonizing slow tease by revealing its interior today. But while the photos may not seem to reveal much beyond a chic, tech-happy design and some very attractive finishes, dig a little deeper and you'll see that Mercedes hid a few clues in there for what to expect under the skin. Power (And Range) Hidden In Plain Sight The first clue we have to work from can be seen in the center console screen, which in the photos is pulled up to a drive mode selector. Clearly visible in the corner of the screen is a little pair of discs with an energetic graphic overlaid on them. We're almost positive they depict the GT 4-Door Coupe's rumored axial-flux electric motors, which feature windings laid out in a hub-and-spoke design instead of wrapping around the motor's circumference.Mercedes-AMGMercedes acquired EV research firm YASA a few years ago, and the two companies have been developing the remarkably compact, energy-dense powertrain to eventually be used in series-production EVs. The infotainment graphics seem to confirm that the Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe will be the first such vehicle to come with axial-flux technology – as suggested by the GT XX concept car from last year. In that form, the three individual motors produce a combined total of 1,341 horsepower, enough to give the show car a top speed of more than 200 miles per hour. We presume the production GT 4-Door Coupe will meet that standard as well.Mercedes-AMGAlso seen hiding on the dashboard is a battery gauge with a range estimate. With 81 percent remaining in the battery, the readout suggests there's 501 kilometers left "in the tank" before the GT needs to be recharged. That'd suggest a full-battery range of 618 km (or 384 miles), a thoroughly impressive number for such a powerful vehicle. Of course, the instrument cluster of a show car doesn't exactly equate to official EPA or WLTP ratings, but the GT 4-Door Coupe could still put Mercedes in the hunt against the Lucid Air Sapphire and (recently discontinued) Tesla Model S Plaid. Both Stylized And Stylish The Mercedes-AMG EV should still remain recognizable as a product from the wizards at Affalterbach, with a high-tech cabin design that makes liberal use of carbon fiber and satin silver trim. The impression begins the moment you peek inside, with a 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster and horizontally oriented 14.0-inch center touchscreen dominating the design. A third 14.0-inch display shows up in front of the passenger, but unlike the dashboard of the new S-Class or E-Class sedans, the 2027 Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe doesn't have a one-pane design, giving each screen its own dedicated location and purpose.2027 Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe Interior 3 CockpitBelow those units is a fuselage-style center console trimmed in an exquisite-looking swath of carbon fiber and housing two wireless device chargers, two cupholders, and a trio of drive mode controllers called Response Control, Agility Control, and Traction Control. As its name suggests, the first coordinates how quickly and sharply the electric motors react to the accelerator pedal. Per Mercedes, Agility Control "changes the agility around the vertical axis," which we think is marketing-speak for reducing body roll by firming up the suspension. The third dial alters how much slip the computer allows before cutting power – no surprise there. At either end of the dash is a sizable, galvanized rotary air vent with intricate translucent surfacing, allowing it to do some of the work of the adjustable ambient lighting. Other illumination appears around the windshield base and along the tops of the door panels, as well as from behind and under the floating screen binnacles in front of the driver and passenger. There's also an expansive panoramic roof split down the middle, which also features bold lighting elements with the Affalterbach crest. Mercedes-AMGA set of AMG-specific front bucket seats also shows up in the cabin, with attractive metal-finished cutouts and robust bolsters for a supportive, sporty look. The rear seats also appear to be pretty comfortable and spacious, although with only two seat belts back there, don't plan on driving the office carpool too much. To that end, we do wish there was more of a bucket-style seat layout, perhaps with a rear center console rendered in the same gorgeous metallic and carbon materials as there is up front. 2027 Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe Interior 1 Dashboard Wide A Debut Is Just Around The Corner Although Mercedes-AMG hasn't confirmed anything, the debut of the GT 4-Door Coupe's interior (and its attendant mechanical suggestions) mean that a full reveal of the sports sedan can't be too far away. We hope the responsive axial-flux motors will provide it with more driver involvement than the current crop of Mercedes EVs, and so far, the design is pretty appealing. If the company can get pricing, performance, and fun in the right balance, the 2027 Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe could be a winner.Source: Mercedes
