Jaguar Type 01Jaguar's first electric car post its controversial rebrand has arrived. It's just as polarizing as you'd expect.Jaguar unveiled the Type 01, the brand's first vehicle since its controversial rebrand two years ago. It's brutalist, boxy, and it's dividing the internet.Reactions online ranged from calling the $130,000 electric sedan "magnificent" to "hideous."When Jaguar first launched the Type 00 Concept in December 2024, its brutalist styling and funky new badge had car enthusiasts foaming at the mouth. I'm not sure I've ever seen a concept car met with so much vitriol. Jaguar fans were livid that the brand was changing its iconic leaping cat logo for something far more minimalist and modern. They were also pretty pissed that Jag traded its typically gorgeous, sweeping, muscular designs—consider the legendary E-Type—for something so angular and square-jawed.Now the concept has become reality. The new Jaguar Type 01 made its debut on Tuesday in New York, looking a whole lot like the off-the-wall concept car from close to two years ago. The web is pretty divided on whether this $130,000 electric sedan is a work of art—or a design that never should've left the drawing board.Jaguar Type 01Some People Love The Jaguar Type 01A quick scan of reactions online shows that the Type 01 is actually seeing much more positivity than its predecessor did.The reveal post on the Jaguar subreddit shows a very healthy mix of opinions, from people who love it, to those who hate it, to some people who might not be thrilled with this new direction from Jag but understand it.There seem to be a surprising number of longtime Jaguar owners who actually seem to like both the car's design, and the idea of it. One Redditor who claims to have owned four Jags over the years said that while they don't love the interior, "The exterior, though... That's magnificent. It's the best looking EV I've seen. It's brutally handsome and purposeful."Jaguar Type 01One commenter on Jaguar's Instagram post about the Type 01 said that, like most Jags, it's ahead of its time. "It looks great as an EV. People will only start appreciating it after it's discontinued," they wrote. "That's typical for Jaguars: few people buy them while they're available, but once they're gone, everyone calls them a masterpiece."There are a bunch of comments that hint at it looking like the '90s cartoon Batmobile, which is hard to argue with. It does indeed have an art-deco vibe you don't see in car design much these days. "The designer liked the Batmobile from Batman the Animated Series in the 1990's," said one commenter on Auto Trader's YouTube video of the car.Jaguar Type 01Some People Hate ItOne common opinion seems to be that the exterior looks good, with its ultra-boxy design, but that its interior is boring. And I couldn't agree more. The cabin is not only incredibly generic, but it looks claustrophobic. From the outside, the Type 01 looks enormous, suggesting you'll find a cavernous cabin when you open the doors. Instead, it looks like it has less space inside than my 2016 Golf, especially in the back seat. A lot of its large presence seems to come from that extremely long hood, which doesn't do much for interior space. It also is austere and not very Jaguar-like inside, something else many people are saying on social media.Jaguar Type 01"The interior doesn't really say 'Nice materials, pleasant place to be' does it?," one Redditor said. And they're right. With basic designs, very little trim, and a color palette like a Swedish crime-drama morgue, the Type 01 lacks the warmth Jags have always had. That's not where the criticism ended, though. Haters are still very much active on the good ol' internet.Below a post from one Redditor claiming to love the new Type 01, one commenter disagreed: "It's an armored car with a fastback roof. Being inside it looks like an exercise in claustrophobia. Jaguars always gave that hemmed in feeling. But this looks uncomfortably extreme."Jaguar Type 01Even an Instagram post featuring Florence Pugh couldn't save the Type 01 from internet hate. "Put more people in front of the car or it'll be still visible," one commenter said. "Goodness me it's hideous, but I give you that, while the whole world told you don't do it… you plowed on. That's commitment. Self destructing… but still commitment."The lack of classic Jaguar imagery, like the famous logo or hood leaper, still bothers many. One YouTube commenter posted about it on Jag's intro video: "The new logo makes Jag seem like a hipster stationary store that sells fresh cold pressed juices on the side. Wasn't expecting them to still make cars. Who knew?"One Redditor even used Jag's own famous catchphrase against it. "Christ on a Bicycle it's even more ugly and ungainly in motion. No Grace, No Space..." Hey, at least you know Jag isn't paying for social media bots to spam high praise. And if it is, it needs to get its money back.Jaguar Type 01 InteriorCar magazines and online publications seem mostly pretty positive. And anyone who's interested in design seems to comment on what Jaguar calls the "Impossible Panel," which is the rear quarter panel that runs the length of the roofline. It's all one pressed aluminum panel that even Jaguar's software said was impossible to create. So a human with a pen and paper figured out how to do it, taught the computer a thing or two, and then Jag made it. That alone is a win in my book, even if I suspect that slightly denting it would total the car.Overall, the reaction to the Type 01 seems far more positive than the reaction for the Type 00 concept. Fans are still upset about the logo change and the lack of leaper, but that's more to do with the brand itself and not the car. The reactions seem to be about a 50/50 split. But then again, does it even matter? We're talking about low-volume, six-figure, ultra-luxury electric sedan. It doesn't need to appeal to everyone. And as Jaguar's top boss told us, the brand's most vocal haters probably aren't its customers anyway.Check Out Today's Latest EV NewsThe Jaguar Type 01 Is A 1,000-horsepower Beast.
