Lexus made the bold proclamation in 2021 about going fully battery-electric in North America, Europe, and China by 2030. Five years on and with four years left to realize that vision, the Japanese luxury brand owned by Toyota is, however, continuing to bet big on hybrids. Much has changed in the past few years — fully-electric vehicles (EVs) aren't selling by truckloads as previously expected, not in the US anyway, and demand for hybrids has gone up exponentially across segments. Very little surprise, then, that the recent launch of the eight-generation ES 350h has shown just how serious Lexus still is about hybrids. Possibly more now than before. Hybrids Become The Buyers' Choice Lexus Sales of hybrids have been rising over the past several years. Sales in 2026, however, have soared, largely due to increasing gas prices. Average gas prices in the US are now at around $4.50 per gallon, making vehicles with high fuel efficiency not just desirable but often indispensable. Yes, even in the luxury segment.Toyota Motor Corp has always had a lion's share in the U.S. hybrid market, and Lexus is in pole position in the luxury hybrid segment. Coming on the back of a record 2025 — Lexus sold 370,260 units, up by 7.1 percent on a volume basis — the company is promising an even better performance this year as it has the right mix of body types and powertrains to maintain momentum. And in a small but significant way, this new hybrid has a role to play. Why small? It doesn't pull in numbers the way RX, NX, and even the more expensive TX hybrids do. Why significant? This hybrid sedan's lineup is a statement of intent in the luxury midsize sedan space. So what does it bring to the fore? Lexus ES 350h: The New Lexus Hybrid With Luxury, Efficiency, And Love-It-Or-Hate-It Styling Lexus The Lexus ES 350 has been around on American roads since the 1980s. Over the past couple of decades, it has had the arduous task of taking on rivals from the German luxury camp that saunter around with an air of perceived superiority. But while the likes of the Audi A3 and A4, and BMW 3 and 5 Series have been fan favorites, the battle lines are now closing in. The reason is luxury and how much value you can extract from it. Several top-of-the-line mass-market offerings are now closer than ever before to established luxury models, and relying on badge value alone won't guarantee success. Lexus has a way.Lexus The ES 350h takes the luxury quotient several notches higher while keeping pricing under $60,000, a figure rival mid-size luxury sedans have already breached. With an official launch scheduled later this year, the Lexus 350h is relying on luxury to be the most compelling factor pulling in potential buyers. What's on offer?Lexus' sixth-generation hybrid system has been brought to the base trim of the ES, which also comes in fully-electrified 350e and 500e versions. While performance and efficiency will be discussed at length a little further down, it is the premium elements that justify the 'luxury' tag of this sedan. Cabin Layout And Design Trade-In Traditional Refinement For Contemporary Sleek Lexus Inside, the minimalist design has been married to a slew of new technology and comfort additions. For starters, every ES 350h trim includes NuLuxe-trimmed seating and embossed door panel accents, and micro-geometric pattern dashboard trim. There is Thematic Ambient Illumination, which is Lexus' way of offering customizable lighting on floor trim, footwells, and the center console. The front seats are eight-way power adjustable with two-way power lumbar adjustment and offer heated and ventilated functions as well.Premium trims include a 10-speaker Lexus Premium Sound System, and Premium+ trims boast a 17-speaker 1,800-watt Mark Levinson PurePlay surround-sound system. There is a 14-inch touchscreen that sits like a crown on the dashboard, while a 12.3-inch driver display unit sits behind the new steering wheel with 'Lexus' lettering on it. Wireless charging and wireless support for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are obvious, but the ES 350h also comes with a slew of trial or subscription-based tech features like Wi-Fi Connect for Spotify, Drive Connect for cloud-based navigation and voice commands, and Remote Connect for keyless operation.Lexus An option pack is presented, which packs in a Cold Area Package with a windshield wiper deicer, headlamp washer, and a front-seat radiant heater. The Premium trim also gets an optional Convenience Package, which offers intuitive parking assist with automatic braking, rear pedestrian detection, driver monitor, and front cross-traffic alert. These are over and above an updated Lexus Safety System+ 4.0 packed in, offering front pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, risk avoidance, emergency steering assist, intersection turn assist, all-speed dynamic radar cruise control with Eco-Run mode, lane tracing assist, lane departure alert with steering assist, road sign assist, intelligent high beams, and proactive driving assist. The Premium+ trim adds: Traffic jam assist Lane change assist Rear pedestrian detection Front cross-traffic alert Eager But Frugal Lexus While luxury, bordering on opulence, is the hallmark of any Lexus, the newest 350h offers improved hybrid technology, which promises to make it one of the most efficient luxury sedans on the market once again. It is a tried and tested technology that has been further enhanced to offer an even smoother drive experience. The hybrid system now prioritizes the larger electric motor far more than it previously did. Lexus claims this allows engine revs to be kept lower and quieter during daily driving duties. Additions like a microfiber sound absorbing material to the engine's air intake box and a larger muffler on the exhaust system to keep the noise down to a whisper. There's also the Active Noise Control technology in the cabin, which produces counter frequencies through the audio speakers to counteract engine noise.Lexus Europe Pitted against the 2025 model, the latest ES 350h offers more power and, for the first time, all-wheel drive as an option. The 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, combined with a starter generator, has been carried forward, and so has the front motor generator and an electronically controlled continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). The total net output of the 2026 model is now at 244 horsepower on both the front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive trims, compared to 215 on the 2025 model. But despite more power, the fuel efficiency figures have actually gone up from the 2025 model, which had EPA-rated figures of 43 mpg (city) and 44 mpg (highways). This is, once again, thanks to the updated hybrid system in place. Designed To Divide Opinions? Styling Likely To Garner Mixed Reactions Lexus The exterior styling is where opinions are likely to be divided greatly. This particular Lexus sedan has always benefited from a very sophisticated exterior design, minus many of the overindulgence that its German rivals tend to give in to. Up until the 2025 model year, the ES relied on visual aura far more than visual awe. But the latest version of the sedan marks a big departure.Lexus The 2026 ES is noticeably larger than previous versions, with exterior dimensions expanding from almost every angle. Compared to even the 2025 model, the latest ES is longer by 6.5 inches, has a wheelbase that's longer by 3.1 inches, wider by 2.2 inches, and taller by 4.5 inches. In the cabin, headroom for those in the front goes up by 0.8 inches and for those in the back by 0.4 inches. Rear-seat legroom is now 1.6 inches more, while front-seat hip room and front-seat shoulder room have gone up as well.Lexus But coming back out of the cabin, and here is a sedan that's now clearly taken inspiration from the Lexus LF-ZC concept. It is far more angular and sharper than before, complete with the L-shaped trim element along the side. This alone is evidence of Lexus designers trying to get more flashy.Lexus The hybrid ES further manages to distinguish itself by getting an updated front bumper, complete with a narrow upper intake. The 19-inch, 10-spoke wheels come as standard, and there are two new color options — Wavelength and Copper Crest — along with previous shades of Caviar, Ultra White, Cloudburst Gray, and Iridium. Styled For Ramp, Built For Marathons Lexus The jury is still out on whether the updates to the exterior styling on the latest ES work. Full points to the Lexus design team for at least trying to do something different. But whether the dedicated Lexus clientele appreciates that will have to be seen once the hybrid officially launches in June. For now, here's the complete price list of the entire ES lineup:*Includes $1,395 delivery feeWhat's absolutely fantastic for sure is the continuing emphasis on efficiency, refinement, and luxury that the ES models maintain. At a time when manufacturers are realizing that hybrids hold the ace in the American car market, the ES 350h improves its core strengths while looking to cruise down a different styling path. And on these two fronts, the 2026 ES 350h is not just an important departure from the 2025 model, but a march right down to rival camps.
