There’s something for everyone in Jay Leno’s car collection. Whether you’re interested in outrageously fast McLaren hypercars, century-old luxury models, or something else entirely, his garage is home to some of the rarest metal ever cobbled together. While “interesting” is subjective, horsepower is objective and can be used to fairly rank cars. And, when you look for the vehicle with the highest score in that metric among Leno's fleet, there’s one that beats all others, even some of the most powerful cars on the planet. Leno’s Supercar Collection Has Power And Price Jay Leno's Garage YouTubeIt’ll come as no surprise that a car collection worth an estimated $100 million has some expensive supercars in it. What might come as a surprise is that there won’t be a single Ferrari in it. Leno notoriously refuses to buy any Maranello-manufactured vehicles for not wanting to engage in their business practices. No worry though, as there’s plenty of high-cost, high-performance vehicles to collect. McLaren F1 Jay Leno's Garage/YouTube The crown jewel of his collection, Leno has owned a McLaren F1 since 1998. Having bought it for $800,000, it’s now worth an estimated $20 million in part due to the car’s incredible rarity. Just 106 F1 were created between 1992 and 1998, with only 64 being made for the road. The car is so rare and expensive that when fellow F1 owner and Mr Bean actor, Rowan Atkinson, crashed his in 2011, it became the highest insurance claim in the UK at $1.4 million. This hasn’t put the comedian off driving it though, saying it “gets driven at least once a month” in 2025. Porsche Carrera GT VINWikiA pin-up car for many in the 2000s, the Carrera GT was born when motorsport regulations changed and Porsche was left with a 5.7-liter V-10 it didn’t want to scrap. That means this road car has 612 horsepower, 435 lb-ft of torque, and a roughly $1.5 million price tag for anyone rich and brave enough to buy one. Leno bought his new, when it was “only” around $500,000. Koenigsegg Regera Jay Leno's Garage The Koenigsegg Regera has a mind-boggling 1,500 horsepower, achieved by its hybrid system. Even more astounding is its 1,475 lb-ft of torque, helping it to hit 62 mph in 2.8 seconds. The Regera, which today sells for over $3 million, appeared on Jay Leno’s Garage in 2018.While the Regera has some truly insane figures, there’s a car in Leno’s collection that beats it on both power and torque. And torque-wise, it’s not even close. The Blastolene Special Is A Tank On Wheels Via Facebook (Jay Leno's Garage)As impressive as the McLaren F1’s performance is, the Blastolene Special has it beaten. Comfortably. But what engine can provide 810 horsepower and 1,560 lb-ft of torque? Well, a tank engine. The Blastolene Special uses an American military tank engine; a Continental AV1790-5B to be precise. The engine was designed to power the 51-ton M47 Patton Tank, which ran from 1951 to 1960 and saw action in Pakistan, Egypt, Korea and Jordan, among other countries, and weighs 2,500 pounds. Not only does that mean the engine alone weighs more than a 2026 Mitsubishi Mirage but, with the Mirage’s 1.2-liter engine, the Blastolene has more than 24 times the displacement, coming in at a whopping 29.3 liters. That’s more than the Regera, Carrera GT and F1 combined, and you can probably throw a few other cars in Leno’s garage in there as well. The engine was designed to move a 51-ton tank around a warzone, not a hot rod around the streets of California. So, all that torque means you can spin the tires of this vehicle if you so choose. It also means that all the power is right at the bottom end, with peak power coming in at 2,800 rpm before it hits the redline at a less-than-screaming 2,900 rpm.WikiCommons via Weed Army Community HospitalThen there are the fans. The engine is air-cooled and rather than blowing the air down through the engine, they suck it up from underneath. This has two effects on driving. The first being that it can suck up debris from the road, while the second is a wall of hot air blasting out of the hood, straight into the driver and passenger. Great for the winter, maybe not so much for summer.Of course, the car is more than just the engine, and we should really cover who actually made this behemoth. That would be Randy Grubb, an American craftsman who, in 2002, took things he could find in a landfill to create the car. That led to the car having a gearbox from a Greyhound bus, a hand-formed aluminum body, and a design taking inspiration from the 1930s Bonneville Land Speed record cars.Leno purchased the car for $125,000 in 2003 and made some adjustments. For a start, that Greyhound bus gearbox was out, and an Allison HD4060 six-speed box, a transmission more suited to large vehicles, was put in. He also twin-turbocharged the thing, taking it from the 810 horsepower it came with, to the 1,600 horsepower it has now. Safety-wise, rear brakes were fitted, as were headlights and turn signals. Probably for the best, given the car wasn’t intended to be road-legal, but you’d have to be fairly blind to not see the Tank Car coming. Other Grubb Creations BlastoleneSomeone who creates a 22.5-foot-long, tank-powered car doesn’t just create one vehicle and call it a day. The Tank Car was conceived, designed, and completed in a year. Naturally, Grubb has turned his hand to several other similarly-bonkers machines. Blastolene Indy Special The Drive with Alan Taylor via YouTubeAnother tank-engined, aluminum-bodied beast, the Indy Special looks like a 1950s-era Indy Car, hence the name. Coming after the Special, the Indy Special cost over $400,000 to make and sold for $280,500 at auction in 2010. Blastolene B-702 Classic.comMade to look like a French car from the 1930s, the B-702 is 19.5 feet long and 7.8 feet wide, in keeping with the Blastolene size. This isn’t powered by a tank engine, instead using an 11.5-liter Twin Six V-12. The car did better at auction than the Indy Special, selling for $550,000 in 2015. Decoliner The Drive with Alan Taylor via YouTubeThe love child of a 1973 GMC motorhome and a 1953 White COE garbage truck, the Decoliner is a double-decker bus that you drive like a yacht. Commanding the vehicle from the top deck means you get to see the incredulous looks of everyone around, and can appreciate the insanity of the $500,000 amalgamation. Not Leno’s Only Car With A Non-Car Engine Jay Leno's GarageWhile the Blastolene Special is certainly one of his largest vehicles, it’s far from the only one that isn’t powered by a conventional engine. Leno has multiple jet-powered vehicles, including the 1963 Chrysler Turbine Car, an MTT Y2K Superbike, and his own EcoJet concept car. Then there’s the Stanley Steamer, unsurprisingly powered by steam, a 1934 Rolls-Royce Merlin which is powered by the same engine used in the Spitfire, and a Bentley Meteor, powered by another tank engine. But the Blastolene Special is undoubtedly the largest, most impressive of them all. While the Tank Car isn’t going to beat any supercars in a straight line (though its roughly 140 mph top speed is nothing to be sniffed at), that doesn’t really matter. There are plenty of high-performance supercars in the world, all pushing the same numbers and the same design, with only small differences in things like trim and color. There’s only one Blastolene Special, though, and it has more power than all of them.
