'It Works!': North Carolina Man Reveals a Secret Lexus Hack You Didn’t Know You Needed

A Lexus owner miffed by his car’s windshield wiper position finally found a hack to attain a more streamlined look.
TikTok user Cole (@rollincole_7) uploaded a viral clip on the app venting his dislike for his car’s staggered, upright windshield wipers. That is, until he discovered how to solve this issue and, in the process, learned about a feature he didn’t know his vehicle had.
What is the Lexus Wiper Hack?
“All right I’m gonna show you guys a secret Lexus wiper hack that I don’t think anyone knows. Everybody driving around with their wipers on these, I don’t know, 2007 through 2018 Lexus. Their wiper’s up, like this,” he says, pantomiming how the windshield wipers look with his hand.
“When I bought this car, they were sitting up,” he continues, adding, “I was like, ‘Why are the wipers like that?’ No idea, I guess he always left them like that. It looks pretty horrible. I don’t know how anyone could just drive around with their wipers looking like that. But let me show you.”
Following this, his video cuts to footage of the wipers.
“Look how stupid that looks,” he says. He shortly explains that this aesthetic isn’t simply a design choice on Lexus’ part. It’s actually a feature in the car.
“That is actually what they call, ‘winter mode,’” Cole explains. “I guess that’s for snow to not break your wipers or something I don’t … I really have no idea,” he relays to his viewers.

Fixing the Lexus Wipers
Next, he reveals how to put the wipers back into their original position.
“But this is how you fix that,” he says, cutting to footage of him standing beside his vehicle. Leaning over the hood, he places his hands on top of the windshield wipers and presses them down. This results in a sleeker visual for the front of the car, with the wipers nestled right beneath the top of the hood.
“That’s it, you push down on them. And if you need them back into ‘winter mode,’” he says before using his hand to click them back up into place. “Winter mode. You want them back into regular mode,” he clicks them back down again. “How much better that looks. Less wiper you can see, better. I think everyone can agree on that,” Cole says.
What is the Purpose of Winter Mode?
Various online resources refer to this climate-specific windshield wiper setting.
A YouTube tutorial explains that winter mode is a helpful way to help curb ice and snow accumulation on windshield wipers during cold weather months. It can also be used to get the wipers ready to swap for new ones.
Many people are apparently unaware that winter mode exists.
A Reddit user shared their disdain for the heightened blade position. “I just noticed that the wipers on my ES330 stay kinda high at their resting position. Does anyone know what could cause this?” they asked.
Several explained that the blades were set to winter mode.
One Redditor explained how to return the wipers to the standard position, writing, “Simply push down on the wiper arm and they will snap into the ‘down’ position. To get them back into the ‘up’ position, simply pull up on the arm.”
More Lexus Wiper Advice
Many people who replied to Cole’s video thanked him for his mini-tutorial on wiper blade resetting.
As one person put it, “I was always wondering why it’s like that because it kinda blocked visibility. Thanks bro,” one person remarked. Another said, “Bruh, mine have been in winter mode for years.”
A third person highlighted how some Lexus vehicles are outfitted with wiper-heating, too. This lets drivers thaw their wipers, which can, in turn, help de-ice the windshield
“Do you know if your model has the ‘heated wiper defroster’? If you do, then we leave them down because the down position will allow them to heat,” they wrote.
