What's New For 2027?Mid-size trucks don't sell nearly as well as full-size ones here in the United States. Full-size trucks like the Ford F-150 dominated the market with over two million units in 2025, compared to just over 600,000 in the mid-size segment. Of those sales, the Toyota Tacoma blew away its competition, selling over 270,000 units and beating out its closest rival, the Chevrolet Colorado, by more than two-to-one.Front 3/4 view of 2027 GMC Canyon AT4X in Volcanic Red Tintcoat driving on an off-road trail.GMCThe 2027 Chevy Colorado and its platform sibling, the 2027 GMC Canyon, get a refresh that General Motors will help its trucks catch up with the Tacoma. Though they are not all-new like the 2027 Sierra and Silverado 1500, the Canyon and Colorado get a much-needed upgrade under the hood that should make it more appealing to truck buyers. Is it a big enough change? I drove the 2027 Canyon at GM's Milford Proving Ground to find out.More Power & Better SoundBoth the Colorado and Canyon are still powered by a 2.7-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, but it gets a healthy boost for 2027. It's now rated at 350 horsepower and 450 lb-ft of torque, increases of 40 and 20, respectively. While it still can't match the Ford Ranger Raptor with its 400-hp twin-turbo V6, the Canyon now ties its Chevy sibling for the most standard power in the class.ModelStandard HorsepowerStandard TorqueGMC Canyon350 HP450 LB-FTToyota Tacoma159 HP180 LB-FTFord Ranger270 HP310 LB-FTNissa Frontier310 HP281 LB-FTI didn't have a chance to time the Canyon from 0-60, but it should be quicker than the previous model, which could do the sprint in the mid-seven-second range. GMC also improved the engine note, improving the growl from the under the hood. It still doesn't scream like the outgoing V6, but this should be a nice change for detractors who didn't like how the turbo-four sounded previously.Jared Levenson/AutoblogThe AT4X Still RocksAlong with the additional power, GMC retuned the Baja Mode and launch control on the AT4X trim level; the latter can learn from the terrain and improve traction after two launches. GMC let me loose on its proving ground off-road course, where the AT4X trim proved to be more than capable of high-speed slides. The Multimatic Dynamic Suspension Spool Valve (DSSV) dampers use hydraulic fluid to control the shocks, softening the blows during off-road driving.Front ¾ view of the 2027 GMC Canyon AT4 in Summit White exterior color.GMCYou can take big impacts in the Canyon, and it never feels brutal inside the cabin. That excellent damping carries over on-road, where the AT4X trim feels soft over speed bumps and other rough pavement. The AT4X combines the Denali's with the AT4's capability.Mostly The Same CanyonAside from the additional power, the Canyon hasn't changed much compared to last year. It gets some minor additions such as new wheels across the lineup, a 5G Wi-Fi hotspot, universal remote, and new colors for the interior and exterior. If you liked how the Canyon looked before, the 2027 model won't change your opinion.View of interior in the 2027 GMC Canyon AT4X with Obsidian Rush interior color.GMCThat statement rings true for the interior as well, where all of my gripes carry over from last year. The Canyon's back seat is small, but its competitors don't have much rear space either. GMC's cabin is premium, especially in upper trims like the AT4X and Denali and the Google-powered infotainment is easy to use. The Canyon does not have physical switches for the headlights (they are controlled on the screen), but more frequently-used functions like volume and temperature have real knobs and buttons.Ready To Compete? It doesn't have the mainstream appeal of its Chevy sibling, but the 2027 GMC Canyon is still a compelling truck in the mid-size segment. GMC appeals to the upper end of the market with premium trim levels like the AT4X and Denali, and now it delivers the most power without needing to spend up on an optional engine. That being said, there are some competitors that match or exceed the Canyon's hp or torque numbers, like the Ranger Raptor and Tacoma i-Force Max Hybrid.View of the dashboard and instrument panel in the 2026 GMC Canyon Elevation with Jet Black interior.GMCPricing for the base Elevation trim with 2WD starts at $39,500 plus a $2,095 delivery fee. A loaded AT4X costs $57,900 and we don't have pricing available for the AT4X AEV Edition, which will add even more off-road capability.TrimMSRPElevation (2WD/4WD)$39,500/$42,800AT4$46,100Denali$53,600AT4X$57,900I don't think the engine tuning alone would convince someone to leave a competitor, but if a truck buyer was already on the fence about considering a Canyon, it's a nice bonus. The weakness are still there, but the Canyon still has many reasons to consider it over a Tacoma or other rivals.
