Honda has issued a recall for 59,887 EVs because their backup cameras could separate and fail. Honda's Prologue and Acura's ZDX EV may have been improperly glued from the factory, which will eventually result in the adhesive failing. Once that happens, the housing can separate and allow moisture or debris into the camera assembly, potentially obscuring the backup camera. The issue sounds like a minor one, but it places Honda in violation of a Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard that has been in place for more than a decade. Regulations require all new vehicles to be fitted with a functional backup camera, and the risk of these failing places Honda in violation of the regulation, prompting the recall.AcuraThe recall itself covers the 2024 Acura ZDX and 2024-2025 Honda Prologue EVs. There's a possibility General Motors may issue recalls for some of its EVs, which were built in partnership with Honda and Acura, and may use the same parts for the backup camera assembly. Regardless, Honda's big concern here is moisture, which could corrode components and cause a more serious failure than simple debris in front of the camera lens.AdvertisementAdvertisementHonda is collaborating with General Motors on the recall, having investigated the defect with the company beginning in May, 2024. The two have been keeping an eye on the issue for the last two years, until Honda decided it was serious and widespread enough to issue the recall. Honda says owners have already filed 2,411 warranty claims for the problem, though no one has been injured. For a fix, Honda will replace the camera with a new, properly sealed part at no cost to owners. Honda says it will notify owners by July 6, but you can check your car for the recall at the NHTSA's website. This story was originally published by Men's Journal on May 26, 2026, where it first appeared in the News section.
