AMSTERDAM — Vietnamese electric mobility company Green SM began a pilot electric taxi service in Amsterdam on Thursday, making the Netherlands its second European market after Denmark and extending the commercial use of VinFast vehicles in a market where the automaker established a presence four years ago. Green SM will initially operate in Amsterdam’s Centrum, West and Zuid districts before expanding to Oost, Noord, Nieuw-West and Zuidoost. The company said the pilot will be used to build its driver network, refine operations and establish service standards before expanding across the Dutch capital. The Amsterdam operation adds another layer to a European expansion that began with VinFast in 2022. VinFast made its European market debut at EVS35 in Oslo in June that year with the VF 8 and VF 9, followed by a Dutch debut at EV Experience at Circuit Zandvoort in September. In October 2022, the company announced Amsterdam as its Netherlands headquarters and planned a local retail operation. Its first two European stores opened in Cologne, Germany, and Paris in December 2022. By October 2025, Amsterdam was already part of VinFast’s European infrastructure. The company exhibited its EB 8 and EB 12 electric buses at Busworld Europe in Brussels, where the EB 12 was presented as a European-compliant model. VinFast identified the Netherlands and Belgium among its initial European target markets for the electric-bus business. Busworld also described the event as VinFast’s European debut for its electric buses. The timing is significant because Green SM is not a separate vehicle manufacturer. The company, established in Vietnam in 2023, operates an electric mobility service built around VinFast vehicles. Reuters reported earlier this month that Green SM planned to enter the Netherlands and other European markets as part of its international expansion. Green SM began European operations in Copenhagen in July, making Denmark its first European market. The Netherlands is now its eighth market globally, according to the company. The Amsterdam operation uses an integrated model in which Green SM supplies the electric vehicles and operates the mobility platform while building its own driver network. In the Netherlands, the company is offering both employment and vehicle-rental arrangements. Drivers using the rental model can receive up to 85% of trip revenue, according to Green SM. Richard Nabil Chahine, CEO of Green SM Europe, said the company’s immediate priority was to establish a reliable operation and adapt its service to the Dutch market. “The Netherlands is an important next step in Green SM’s journey in Europe,” Chahine said in the company’s announcement. He said the company would use feedback from customers and drivers to refine the service. Green SM is offering introductory discounts of 50% per trip, capped at 30 euros, for up to 10 rides per customer during the pilot. The company is also recruiting drivers in Amsterdam, where it has established a Dutch operating office. The Amsterdam pilot gives VinFast another channel for putting its vehicles into commercial service in Europe while Green SM tests its electric taxi model in a market with an established electric-mobility sector. The company said the scale and coverage of its Amsterdam operation will be determined as the pilot progresses.
