Its owner, Joe, had a deeply personal reason for leaving it exactly where it was.The 2001 Jetta 1.8T had belonged to his late wife and was the car she drove every day. Joe told WD Detailing that he drove it home the day after she died, parked it in the backyard, and hadn't heard it run since.Joe's son eventually contacted WD Detailing with a plan to secretly revive the car while his father was undergoing cancer treatment. The team had previously worked on several of Joe's other vehicles, but the Jetta had always been off limits because of the memories attached to it.After roughly 17 years outside, simply washing the Volkswagen wasn't going to cut it. The project turned into a combination of deep detailing and mechanical repairs before Joe could finally see his wife's car again. The Jetta Was In Rough ShapeImage Credit: WD Detailing / YouTube.Years outdoors had left the body covered in heavy contamination, while ants and other insects had moved into parts of the car. Inside, mold and mildew covered sections of the cabin, and the tires were so dry-rotted that WD Detailing considered them unsafe. The mechanical condition wasn't much better. The starter wasn't working, the alternator had seized, the serpentine belt was falling apart, and the fuel pump was also dead.Once those issues were addressed, the turbocharged four-cylinder finally fired. New tires and brake work followed so the Jetta wouldn't merely look presentable but could actually move under its own power again.Bringing The Blue Paint BackImage Credit: WD Detailing / YouTube. The years had been particularly hard on the Jetta's paint, with contamination embedded deeply enough that a clay bar couldn't remove it. WD Detailing resorted to 3,000-grit sandpaper and extensive polishing to recover as much of the original blue finish as possible. Not every mark could be eliminated without repainting the car, so perfection wasn't the objective. The crew also restored the cloudy headlights, polished the stained windshield, and replaced damaged exterior pieces, including a side mirror and taillight. The interior received an equally intensive cleaning. Mold was treated, carpets were extracted, and the heavily soiled seats and trim were cleaned rather than replaced, preserving much of the cabin Joe would remember.Joe Had No Idea It Was ComingImage Credit: WD Detailing / YouTube.WD Detailing eventually brought the finished Jetta to Joe's ice cream shop without telling him what they had been working on. He was already emotional before the car appeared, and seeing it again brought him to tears."I haven't heard that car run in almost 18 years," Joe said after recognizing it. He explained that his wife remained close to him every day and was amazed that the team had managed to get her Jetta running again. There was one final surprise waiting for him. AutoTempest, which sponsored the video, provided Joe with $10,000 to help with expenses related to his cancer treatment. The Jetta still carries the scars of spending nearly two decades outdoors, and that's arguably appropriate. It wasn't transformed into a showroom restoration; it was cleaned, repaired, and returned to running condition while preserving the car Joe had held onto because of who once sat behind its wheel. If you want more stories like this, follow Guessing Headlights on Yahoo so you don't miss what's coming next.
