Ford Fathom EV pickup enters production in Q1 2027 Ford revealed the name and starting price of the upcoming midsize electric pickup last week, the first vehicle based on its Universal EV (UEV) platform. The first prototypes will roll off the assembly lines at Ford’s 3-million-square-foot Louisville Assembly Plant (LAP) in the first quarter of 2027. Ford announced plans a year ago to transform it from a gas-powered vehicle plant into a facility for building fully electric vehicles, starting with the Fathom. The assembly process is a step change from Ford’s and most traditional automakers’ current manufacturing methods. Instead of a fully assembled vehicle rolling down the line, the UEV Production System breaks the vehicle into three sections: the front clip, rear clip, and battery deck. The single large aluminum casting piece replaces dozens of stamped and other welded components it currently uses. The method cuts the number of parts from 146 to build the current Maverick to just two for the Fathom. In the third line, the interior components (seats, consoles, and carpeting) are installed on top of the battery housing, which serves as the vehicle’s floor. The battery itself is then attached from the bottom. It’s also more ergonomic, Bryce Currie, Ford’s chief manufacturing officer, said, which will “require less twisting, turning, and bending.” “We’ve engineered an 84% reduction in reaching over the fender,” Currie explained, adding, “The wiring harness is also more than 4,000 feet shorter and 22 pounds lighter than in our first-genelectric SUV, making it much easier to install.” (Source: Ford) Ford is reinvesting some of the time it saves during assembly into insourcing and automation to improve quality and cost. LAP will have the highest level of automation in final assembly across all Ford plants globally. For example, Ford installed a software module flash station, a first at one of its assembly plants, to ensure the vehicle has the latest software before the vehicle is fully built. Before, if an issue were detected, updates would take about 10 minutes per vehicle. Now, it can be done as the vehicle rolls down the assembly line. With 5G in the facility, operators can diagnose and perform quality checks instantly. The new UEV Production System and assembly tree will go online in the first quarter of 2027, starting with the Ford Fathom. Ford said the Fathom will have more interior passenger space than a Toyota RAV4. It will also be equipped with a large, high-resolution touchscreen, bidirectional charging enabling vehicle-to-load (V2L) capabilities, a digital key, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard. The Ford Fathom will also be the first vehicle to have Apple Maps integrated directly into the navigation system, with turn-by-turn directions, EV routing, and more.
